By Staff | Apr 30, 2014

River 13,

Monroe Central 5

Four Lady Pilots had multi-hit games to lead them to a season sweep from Monroe Central April 23, winning 13-5 in a mercy-rule five inning contest in Woodsfield.

Rosie Romick blasted four singles and knocked in three runs, while Monica Curtis posted a double, two singles, and an RBI to pace the Big Red Machine’s 13-hit attack. Teammates Emelie Heater added a single and a double, while Mackenzie Marshall tacked on a pair of singles. She also knocked in a run, was hit by a pitch, and stole a base.

In addition, Gabby Goudy and Madi Taylor each singled, while Mikayla Cieszeski had a sacrifice bunt. Pilot teammate Landyn Ramsay scored a run, walked twice, and was hit by a pitch, while Zoe Rush and Haylee Bowers each stole a base.

Paden City 15,

Cee-Bees 2

Paden City rocked Cee-Bee pitching for 12 runs in the opening stanza and went on to defeat Clay-Battelle 15-2 in a three-inning mercy-rule shortened game in Blacksville April 24.

Graeson Baker and Abby Still each singled and tripled, while Baker sent home four and Still one to lead the Wildcat attack. Taylor Cosper and Shelby Gatian each singled, with Cosper knocking in one.

From the mound, Amber Neff struck out three Cee-Bees, while walking only one and twirled a three-hitter to help the Wildcats to their ninth victory of the season.

Paden City 9,

Tyler 5

The Lady ‘Cats’ Graeson Baker smacked a single, belted three doubles, and plated a run to lift Paden City over rival Tyler Consolidated 9-5 in softball action at Kidwell April 23.

At the plate, Paden City hurler Taylor Cosper singled, doubled, knocked in a run and took the win from the circle with five strikeouts and zero walks. Amber Neff came in relief, striking out two and walking one to pick up the save. Neff was just as effective at the plate. She singled twice, while knocking in a run.

In addition, Kayla Hizer hit two singles for the Green and White, while Alex Bubenchik paced the Lady Knights with a double and three singles.

River 10,

Frontier 0

Not only did Lady Pilot Monica Curtis earn a victory from the circle in a two-hit, four strike out effort, she also whacked a double and a single to drive in a pair of runs to help River take down the Frontier Lady Cougars 10-0 April 22 in Sardis.

After holding a modest 1-0 lead after one inning, the Lady Pilots exploded for five runs in the third and finished the Cougars off in the fifth with four runs in the mercy-rule shortened game.

Mikayla Cieszeski, Rosie Romick, and Emelie Heater each knocked in a pair, while Romick added a double and a triple and Heater hit a single. In addition, Haylee Bowers and Mackenzie Marshall each singled in a run stole a base to help the Pilots earn their 17th win against only two defeats.

John Marshall 4,

Magnolia 1

John Marshall broke open a close game, scoring three runs in the top of third inning and held off the Lady Eagles to gain a hard-fought 4-1 victory April 24 in New Martinsville.

The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Davianne Croasmun singled and stole a base for the Eagles. Erinn Clegg and Kasey Hilpert walked to fill the bases.

Katie Blatt drilled a hard one to short for the first out. Stevie Mullett then singled to plate Croasmun. Ashley Moore reached first on a fielder’s choice, with Clegg getting caught trying to score. Audrey Gibb grounded out to end the second.

John Marshall scored three runs on two hits in the third and a Magnolia error, while adding an insurance run in the fifth.

Magnolia threatened in the seventh, but a double play by the Lady Monarchs would halt another Magnolia seventh-inning rally.

Mullett singled twice and brought home the only run, while Chapman doubled and both Croasmun and Gibb singled for all the Blue and Gold hits.

Parkersburg 7,

Magnolia 1

Chapman struck out eight and plated the Eagles’ lone run with a single, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Parkersburg Big Reds 7-1 April 23 in Vienna.

The Big Reds scored early and often, while Magnolia’s lone score came in the sixth to break up the shutout.

Gibb and Moore also added singles for Magnolia.

River 9,

Buckeye Trail 3

Mackenzie Marshall knocked in five Lady Pilots on three base hits to lead the River to a convincing 9-3 victory over Buckeye Trail in high school softball action at Sardis April 25.

While hurler Monica Curtis was keeping Trail base runners to a minimum – striking out seven and walking just one – she was also pounding out three base hits of her own, while knocking in a run and stealing a pair of bases.

Teammate Emelie Heater was firing up the Pilot lumber with a pair of singles, an RBI, and a stolen base. Landyn Ramsay added two singles and scored three times, while Rosie Romick drilled a couple base hits.

In addition, Madi Taylor, Mikayla Cieszeski, and Gabby Goudy each singled, with Goudy moving a runner in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

Magnolia 5, Cameron 0

Once again, it was the Mallory Chapman Show as she sat down 11 Cameron batters, got on base in all four plate appearances, including a double and a single to lead Magnolia to a 5-0 victory in Dragon Country April 22.

After reaching on an error in the first stanza and making her way into scoring position, Davianne Croasmun knocked Chapman home with an RBI single. The Eagles added two more runs in the fifth when Audrey Gibb reached safely on a Lady Dragon error and Chapman scooted her to third with a double. They both touched home plate on an Abbey Durig double.

Magnolia scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Gibb reached first on another Dragon error and scampered to third on a Chapman single. She then raced home on a Durig sacrifice fly and Chapman waltzed home on another Croasmun base hit.

Meanwhile, Chapman erased any thoughts of a Cameron rally with a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom half of the seventh.

Magnolia pounded out nine hits, with Croasmun, Durig, and Chapman each getting a pair of hits, with Durig plating three runs and Croasmun bringing home the other two.
