Area Softball Teams Heating Up The Diamonds

Magnolia 3, River 1

Mallory Chapman struck out 15 Lady Pilot batters and walked one en route to a 3-1 Magnolia victory over River April 7 at New Martinsville’s Hydro Field. Offensively, Chapman was intentionally walked twice and was hit by a pitch with bases juiced to score a run.

In the third inning, Ashley Moore singled and Audrey Gibb reached on an error. Chapman got her free ride to load the bases, and, with two outs and the bases juiced, a routine fly-ball turned into two Magnolia runs.

Magnolia scored an insurance run in the fourth, while the Pilots got a run in the sixth with a pair of hits, including a double by Mackenzie Marshall.

For the Pilots, Marshall had two hits, while Emelie Heater and Madi Taylor each singled. For the Blue Eagles, Moore singled twice, while Davianne Croasmun singled and scored. Chapman got on base three times, scoring twice, while Kasey Hilpert and Abbey Durig each walked and scored a run.

Gabby Goudy pitched 3.23 innings, struck out six and walked five, while Monica Curtis pitched the remainder of the game, striking out one.

Hundred 11, Valley 3

Keyed by 10 errors, the Hundred Lady Hornets scored 11 runs on 12 hits to defeat Valley 11-3 in girls’ softball action April 14 in Pine Grove.

After a scoreless first, the Lady Hornets stung the Lumberjills multiple times in the second. Nikki Cunningham got on base on a ‘Jill error and moved into scoring position on an Andrea Nagy solid single down the pike. Erika Hunter’s fielder’s choice scored Cunningham and Dakota Kuhn launched a two-run shot to clear the bases.

Hundred scored twice in the third. Bethany Wheeler started the frame with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. She advanced to third on a single by Cunningham and both Wheeler and Cunningham scored on a pair of Valley miscues.

The Lumberjills got on the scoreboard in the third and twice in the fourth. Angela Sharpe singled and scored on a Hundred error and Cassidy West walked to open the fourth. West let no grass grow, hijacking a base then scoring on a Bre Harris single. Harris would make her way around the bases and touch home on an Alyssa Sharpe RBI single.

Singles by Nagy, Cunningham and Brittany Tustin resulted in three Hundred tallies, while Tarneka Kernen, Cunningham would score on a Madeline Goff single in the sixth.

Hundred finished the scoring in the seventh. Paige Shriver opened the frame with a single and scored on a Cunningham single.

Kuhn had three hits, including a home run, while Cunningham, Kernen and Goff each belted two hits to lead the Hundred bats. Shriver, Nagy and Tustin each posted singles.

Shriver was the pitcher of record. She struck out eight and walked three, while limiting the Lumberjills to singles by Harris, Angela and Alyssa Sharpe.

River 12, Paden City 0

The hot-hitting Big Red Pilot Machine pounded out 11 hits and scored 12 runs and Monica Curtis struck out three Lady ‘Cats enroute to a three-inning 12-0 shutout over Paden City, April 16 at Paden City Park.

Curtis also helped herself out at the plate, singling twice, while knocking in a run. Haylee Bowers padded her stats with a triple and a double off the left field fence that plated a run. Meanwhile, freshman phenom Emelie Heater pounded out two singles and a triple.

In addition, Rosie Romick doubled and knocked in four runs, while Mikayla Ciszeski singled in two runs. Madi Taylor lined an RBI single, while Makenzie and Bre Marshall both drilled singles.

Taylor Cosper was the pitcher of record and took the loss for Paden City.

Cameron 5, Paden City 1

Paden City’s Megan Pierce drilled an RBI double, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Cameron Dragons, 5-1 at Paden City Park April 16.

Amber Neff and Taylor Cosper combined for a six-hitter, while striking out seven and walking four Lady Dragon batters. Paden City committed four costly errors.

River 12, Shenandoah 3

The Lady Pilots scored nine runs in the sixth inning – and Gabby Goudy struck out 10 Shenandoah Zep batters – enroute to a 12-3 victory April 19 in the first game of a double header in Sardis.

Both Goudy and Haylee Bowers were busy pounding the ball, with Bowers hitting a pair of doubles to go along with a single and an RBI. Goudy knocked in a pair of teammates with a bases-loaded stand-up triple, while Landyn Ramsay plated a pair with a single.

In addition, Emelie Heater was hot at the plate, knocking in a run with a double, while Madi Taylor and Mackenzie Marshall each plated a run with singles. Rosie Romick and Monica Curtis each belted a single for the Pilots. Heater swiped two bases for the Pilots, while Taylor and Elizabeth Bremenkamp each hijacked one.

In the nitecap, the Lady Pilots scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings, while Curtis scattered six hits and kept the Zeps at bay with eight strike outs.

Bowers and Goudy were just effective in the second game, singling twice, while Mikayla Cieszeski belted an RBI double.

In addition, Taylor added an RBI single, while Romick posted a base hit. Bowers, Taylor and Marshall each stole a base.

“We are seeing the ball pretty well right now and getting the key hits and getting out of jams with good fundamental defense and outstanding pitching,” said River Head Coach Dave Wright.

River 11, Frontier 0

The Lady Pilots broke open a close game with 11 runs in their final two at bats, scoring seven runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to tame the Lady Cougars 11-0 in softball action in New Matamoras April 18.

Bowers knocked in five runs on a pair of triples, while Marshall knocked in two with a double and a sacrifice fly. Heater singled, and, along with Ciszeski, plated a run. Curtis kept the Frontier squad in check with a six-inning mercy-rule one-hitter from the circle, while striking out four and walking only one.

After a rematch with the Lady Cougars Tuesday before going to the press, the Lady Pilots will host Buckeye Trail April 25 at 5 p.m.

Magnolia 4,

Ravenswood 3

Mallory Chapman and Davianne Croasmun each singled and blasted a home run to help Magnolia claim a 4-3 victory over Ravenswood April 21 in Ravenswood.

On the hill, Chapman struck out 11, while Kasey Hilpert and Katie Blatt each belted a pair of base hits. Jordan Grimm and Ashley Moore each added RBI singles.

The Lady Eagles will host John Marshall at 5 p.m. April 24 and Brooke April 28 in a double-header starting at 4 p.m.

Paden City 9, Valley 1

Paden City’s Amber Neff plated three runs with three singles, while teammates Abby Still and Hannah Stanley singled twice to lead the Lady Wildcats to victory over the home-standing Lady Lumberjills April 21.

Tori Anderson added a double, while Katie Shreves and Maddie Cox each singled for Paden City. Taylor Cosper got the win from the circle for the ‘Cats. She struck out eight, while Neff got the save in relief.

The Lumberjills’ Bre Harris struck out two and walked five in picking up the loss, while she and Arizona Cunningham had the only ‘Jill hits.

Valley will have hosted Hundred after press time, while Paden City will head to Tyler Consolidated tonight at 5:30 p.m.

River 10, Tyler 0

The River Pilots made quick work against Tyler Consolidated April 21 in Kidwell, scoring early and often to claim a 10-0 run-rule shortened game.

Cieszeski plated three runs with a pair of singles, while Curtis drilled two singles. Bowers blasted a bases loaded double, while Goudy singled in two teammates.

In addition, Romick added an RBI single, while Makenzie Marshall and Madi Taylor each had a base hit. Curtis scattered singles by Tyler’s Devinn Moore and Tiffany Smith, while picking up the win from the hill. She struck out one and didn’t walk a batter.
