‘Jills Have A Mix Of Players To Work With

By Staff | Mar 26, 2014

Five seniors headline this year’s Valley Valley Lumberjill softball squad and second-year Head Coach Adam Lemon expects to have a nice mix of players to put together for this season.

Leading the way is sophomore Bre Bucher, who was put in the fire last season as the Lumberjills top hurler. She did quite well could have an exceptional season.

Bucher was also the team’s top on-base player and top hitter. “If we can keep Bre back healthy, we should compete,” said Lemon.

When Bucher isn’t pitching, she will play either shortstop or third base, while fire plug Megan Martin or first-year hurler and senior standout Angela Sharpe will fill in when Bucher needs a rest. Sharpe and her twin sister Alyssa also were top hitters last season.

When she is not pitching, Angela will hold down short or third, while Alyssa will play either at first, second or in the outfield. When not on the mound, Martin will be at centerfield and will bat early in the order so they can use her speed on the bases.

Senior Arizona Cunningham, along with classmates Heather Cain and Alexis Campbell will see time in the outfield as well as being a designated player. Sophomore Grace Berry will see some time in the infield.

Joining the squad are freshmen Kira Fetty, Gracie Hayes, Amanda Sharpe and Cassidy West. West looks to be the team’s shortstop, while Hayes will see some time at third and in the outfield. Fetty and Amanda Sharpe will compete for playing time in the outfield, as well as a pinch hitter and pinch runner when called upon.

“We have a good mix of seven first-year players, along with five solid seniors to lead and guide this team in the right direction,” stated the coach.

Senior captain Alyssa Sharpe went a bit farther in adding, ” Even with a lot of new freshmen players, we are still coming along great. One of our team goals is to be the best we can be and win. And that’s what we hope to do.”

Assisting Lemon is Molly Bucher who was the team’s scorekeeper last season and a long-time assistant coach.

The Lady ‘Jills will be without graduates Megan Bucher, Meranda Roe and Jessica Ashcraft,
