Madonna 93, Hundred 31

Weirton Madonna scored the first 18 points in the West Virginia Class-A Region I, Section I quarter finals against the Hundred Lady Hornets and didn’t look back in securing a 93-31 verdict inside the Bill Barrett Gymnasium in Weirton Feb. 22.

The Blue Dons went up 27-6 at the end of the first quarter and pushed it to 60-17 at the break. Madonna increased its lead in the third quarter to 73-23 before finishing off the young Hornets with a 16-6 run in the final period of play.

Lindsay Jones tallied a double-double, 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while hauling in 10 rebounds in her last basketball game for Hundred. Teammate Paige Shriver followed with six markers and pulled down six boards. Madeline Goff and Emily Rine each recorded a basket from downtown, while Valerie Soles and Josie Phillips each netted a basket and a free throw for all the Hundred scoring.

Lady Hornets 46, Valley 44

The Valley Lumberjills raced out to a 21-19 advantage in the opening half, but the Hundred Hornets came roaring back to claim a hard-fought 46-44 victory in Pine Grove Feb. 21.

Rine paced the Lady Hornets with a game-high 19 markers, while Jones and Shriver shared 22 points. Phillips posted four points, while Mady Wheeler ended the Lady Hornets scoring with a made free throw.

In addition, Jones pulled down a season-high 18 rebounds and made four steals, while Shriver hauled in seven rebounds and made a game-high six steals, while dishing out three assists.

For the ‘Jills, Madison Arnolds and Sarah Bassett each netted 14 markers, while Erin Brown netted 10 points. Alisha Carter ended the Lady ‘Jills scoring with a pair of bonus bombs.

In the junior varsity tilt, the Lady ‘Jills got redemption, winning 50-21. The Hornets led 8-7 after one period, but the ‘Jills responded with 19 markers in the second stanza to pull in front 26-12 at the break.

Melanie Thomas was the top scorer for the ‘Jills with 15 markers, while Arnolds chipped in eight points in her only one period of action. Katelyn Brown and Marah Dudgeon each followed with six points, while Megan Martin responded with four points and Cassidy West and Erin Brown each sank a deuce.

Rine sank six markers to pace the young Hornets, while Mady Wheeler, Meliah Umstead and Sarah Crihfield each sand two baskets and Madeline Goff a triple.

Union 54, Hundred 36

In an HIT make up game, Feb. 17, Hundred traveled to Union and came home with a 54-36 loss. Shriver led the Lady Hornet charge with 12 points, while stuffing her stats with eight rebounds, five steals and three assists.

In addition, Jones followed with eight points and 10 rebounds, while Nikki Cunningham tacked on five markers. Soles added four points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Ashley Miller netted three points and Phillips tallied a deuce.

Clay-Battelle 46, Hundred 37

Seven Hundred Hornets scored, but it wasn’t enough to get past Clay-Battelle, who won 46-37 in girls’ basketball last week in a make up contest.

Shriver paced the Hornets with a dozen markers, hauled in in six boards and hijacked five basketballs. Phillips followed with six tallies, while Soles netted five markers and grabbed eight boards.

In addition, Cunningham and Rine each recorded four points, while Jones swished a bonus bomb and corralled eight off the glass. Elaine Topp sank a deuce and tallied a freebie.

Beallsville 63, Hundred 45

The Beallsville Blue Devils raced out to a 23-7 lead and had to hold on for a 63-45 victory over Hundred Feb. 20 in Blue Devil territory.

The Hornets had three players score in double figures, with Holden Moore leading the charge with 14 points. Greg and Danny Stewart combined for 21 points and Andrew King sank five markers. Meanwhile, Hunter Goddard tallied a three spot and Joe Mars hit a deuce.

The Blue Devils raced out to a 23-13 advantage after two periods of play, but the Hundred Hornets outscored them 25-10 in the second half to gain a 38-33 victory.

Brandon White led all scorers with 13 points, while Mars, Greg Jones and Devon Kimble each hit for six points. Danny Kolat dropped in a deuce.

Cameron 82, Hundred 25

The Cameron Dragons raced out to a commanding 45-3 lead and coasted to a 82-25 victory over Hundred in boys basketball action, Feb. 21 in Dragon territory.

Moore paced the Hornets with 15 points, while King and Danny Stewart each knocked in four points, and King a triple.

Valley 74, Hundred 55

The Valley Lumberjacks used a 40-15 first-half run and held off a gallant second-half Hundred surge to claim a 74-55 victory Feb.18 inside the Hornets Nest.

Triston Kocher, Jack Wells and Joey Preat each contributed nine markers in the first half for the Lumberjacks, while Holden Moore and Hunter Goddard each tallied a dozen points in the second half for Hundred.

Tucker Cain scored a team-high 14 points and made two steals to pace the Lumberjacks, while Wells and Preat evenly divided 26 points and 30 rebounds. Kocher pumped in 12 points and grabbed 13 boards.

In addition, Trey Streets contributed nine points and made two steals, while Hayden Lancaster swished a triple and a two-pointer. Alex Midcap knocked in a pair of baskets, while Dylan Irvin and Taylor Bates each drained a deuce. For the Hornets, Moore tallied a game-high 18 points, including sinking 4-4 free throws, while Goddard tallied 12 points that included a trio of bonus bombs. Danny Stewart marked up 11 points, while Andrew King sank eight markers. Joe Mars and Ethan Umstead each netted three points to end all the scoring.

In the junior varsity tilt, Valley would get the sweep, winning 47-20. Dylan Irvin netted 14, while Colton Ring and Lathe Ueltschy each recorded nine for the Lumberjacks.

For the Hornets Brandon Armstrong tallied a team-high nine markers, while Greg Jones scored five points. Joe Mars, Derek Crihfield and Danny Kolat each recorded a deuce, while Mars and Kolat shared 15 rebounds.

Valley 64, East Richland 42

After holding a 20-6 lead after one, the Valley Lumberjacks cruised to and easy 64-42 victory over East Richland Feb. 24 at East Richland High School.

Kocher paced the ‘Jacks with 16 points that included a pair of threeballs, while Wells contributed 11 points, including one triple, and hauled in seven rebounds. Lancaster followed with 10 markers, that also included a pair of threeballs, while Tory Goontz swished a pair of long ones. Streets scored nine points and hijacked two basketballs, while Preat chipped in with six points and grabbed eight boards. Irvin netted four points, and Cain hit a deuce.

Donahue 58, Lady ‘Jills 32

Seven Valley Lumberjills scored, but it would take more than that to avoid a 58-32 defeat by Bishop Donahue in an OVAC Consolation matchup Feb. 18 in McMechen.

Sarah Bassett led the way offensively with seven markers, while Alisha Carter netted six points and Karissa Headley five points. In addition, Melanie Thomas, Madison Arnolds and Erin Brown each netted four points, while Cassidy West sank a deuce.

Lady Knights 70, Valley 24

Tyler Consolidated had a 22-2 advantage after eight minutes of play and held on to defeat the Valley Lumberjills 70-24 in girls’ basketball action Feb. 22 in Kidwell.

Karissa Headley and Sarah Bassett each netted a team-high seven markers, while Madison Arnolds tacked on four points. Cassidy West, Melanie Thomas and Erin Brown each recorded a deuce for all the Lumberjill scoring.

Sydney Reed paced the Lady Knights with 23 markers, while April Fish and Vanessa Tapleton scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
