Magnolia Boys’ Win Boggs Pizza Roundball Classic
Magnolia 101,
St. John 33
Blue Eagle Dylan Shimp tickled the twine from well beyond the arc to finish off Bellaire St. John 101-33 in the opener of the Boggs Pizza Roundball Classic at Tyler Consolidated High School Jan. 17.
Magnolia built a 32-5 lead after one period of play, and led 58-23 at the break, before finishing with a 43-10 run in the second half to gain the impressive win.
Spencer Campbell posted 23 markers, including five bonus bombs, to lead the Blue Eagles. Mitch Winters scored 10 of his 16 points in the opening quarter, while hauling in 11of his team-high 15 boards during the same time frame.
Preston Boswell and Derek Blain each scored 10 markers, while Kyle Ritz netted nine markers and Zach Wilhoite and Wesley Morgan each tacked on seven points.
In addition, Tyler Anderson followed with six points, including a long triple, while Dillon Jackson and Chase Miller each posted four points.
Tyler Consolidated 62,
Valley 51
The Valley Lumberjacks led 11-2 to open the game, but the Silver Knights outscored them 46-37 to earn a spot in the Saturday championship contest against Magnolia.
Tucker Cain led all scorers for the Lumberjacks, while Trey Streets and Triston Kocher shared 27 markers. Jack Wells followed with seven tallies, while Joey Preat added four points and Dusty Lowe nailed a threeball.
Consolidated’s Jace Reed scored a team-high 15 points, while Kordel Stewart posted 14 points. Dylan Reynolds contributed 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds from his guard position.
St. John 70, Valley 61
Valley had three double-digit scores against Bellaire St. John, but it wasn’t enough to get the Irish, who won 70-61 during the roundball classic Jan. 18.
Wells paced the ‘Jacks with 19 markers, while Streets added 16 markers, including a trio of thee-point baskets. Kocher posted 10 markers, while Preat, Lowe and Cain each scored a pair of deuces.
In addition, Alex Midcap and Taylor Bates each nailed a deuce.
Magnolia 75,
Tyler Consolidated 48
Boswell led four double-digit Magnolia scorers with 26 markers, including four bonus bombs, while Campbell tacked on 20 more. Winters and Wilhoite each accounted for 10 points.
Miller and Blain each tallied four points, while Ritz cashed in with a deuce.
Reynolds contributed 14 points and made seven steals to pace the Silver Knights, while his teammate Cole Kocher tacked on 10 points.
Frontier 53,
Lady Eagles 51
The Frontier Lady Cougars scored a deuce at the buzzer to beat Magnolia 53-51 in the semifinals of the Boggs Pizza Roundball Invitational Jan. 16 at Tyler Consolidated High School.
Magnolia led the whole game. But, after a miss late in the game, Frontier netted the game-winner to earn the right to play Tyler Consolidated, who beat Valley 62-23.
Mallory Chapman earned top scoring honors for Magnolia with 21 points. She also had 10 rebounds and blocked three shots, while Taylor Ludewig netted a season-high 11 points, including one triple. Ludewig also hijacked two basketballs. In addition, Grace Berisford and Kelsi Chapman combined for 15 points, including four threeballs. Katie Blatt and Ciera Fowler each netted a deuce.
Tyler 62, Valley 23
Tyler Consolidated raced out to a 39-10 advantage at the break and never looked back in handing Valley a 62-23 defeat in the semifinal.
Melanie Thomas was high scorer for the Lumberjills, netting eight points, while Megan Martin scored three markers. Bailea Underwood and Erin Brown each netted a pair of deuces, while Madison Arnolds and Kaitlyn Brown each netted a jumper.
Sydney Reed earned top scoring honors for Tyler with 21 points, while Sophie Kinnard tacked on 14 points.
Magnolia 62, Valley 36
In the consolation game between Magnolia and Valley it was all Lady Eagles. Berisford and Mallory Chapman teamed for 31 points, while Blatt and Kelsi Chapman shared 13 points to lead Magnolia to a 62-36 victory.
Ludewig tacked on four markers, while Audrey Gibb, Fowler and Autumn Cecil each netted a deuce. Jordan Dulaney and Tylar Seckman sank free throws for all the Magnolia scoring.
Erin Brown paced the ‘Jills with 10 points, including two from beyond the arc, while Alisha Carter swished all three of her baskets from downtown. Sarah Bassett tallied eight markers, while Price chipped in with four points. Arnolds and Kaitlyn Brown each made a deuce, while Thomas and Cassidy West each netted a free throw.
