Valley ‘Jills 40,

Cameron 32

After a slow and rocky start, the Valley Lumberjills would sink its first bucket two minutes into the second period, and continue to pound the boards and come away with a hard-fought 40-32 victory over the Cameron Dragons Jan. 13 in Pine Grove.

The ‘Jills tallied only two made free throws by Madison Arnold in the first period and she would also tally their first basket on a put-back in the second stanza before teammate Erin “Twiggy” Brown came alive with a bucket on a put-back to knot the game at 10, and a one-handed charity toss to give the hosts a 18-17 lead at the break.

Valley would out-score their guests 8-5 in the third period and would tally 12 of the game’s last 16 points to claim the nod.

Brown tallied a game-high 15 points, and grabbed 12 boards for her first double-double of the season to lead the Lumberjills to its second victory of the season. Sarah Bassett nearly earned a double-double as well, scoring nine points and hauling in 15 rebounds.

Arnold also hauled in 15 rebounds and scored eight markers, while Karrissa Headley posted six markers, including a basket from beyond the arc. Cassidy Price came off the bench to net a deuce.

Both teams shot 52 free throws, with the Lumberjills making 15-32, and the Dragons, 8-20-that proved to be the difference.

Valley will travel to Tyler Consolidated Thursday to take on the Lady Knights in the Boggs Pizza Roundball Classic at 7 p.m.

In the junior varsity tilt, the Lumberjills scored early and often to gain the nod, 32-13. Melanie Thomas led all-scorers with 12 points, while Cassidy West tallied eight points to pace the Lumberjill squad.

Lady Eagles 69,

Beallsville 27

The Magnolia Blue Eagles Girls’ Basketball Team has been picking up quality wins of late, beating Oak Glen 50-47 Jan. 9 and Beallsville 69-27 Jan. 11.

In the victory over Beallsville, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 39-4 advantage by the break, and went on to post a 69-27 final, with the 13 Lady Eagles who dressed scoring points.

Grace Berisford lead all-scorers with 13 markers, including a trio of three-point baskets, while Kierra Standiford netted 11 points. Mallory Chapman and Cierra Fowler teamed for 15 points, while Kelsi Chapman netted six points. In addition, Audrey Gibb posted five points, while Katie Blatt added four points. Anna Gibb tallied three markers, while Taylor Ludewig, Abby Durig, Jordan Dulaney, Tylar Seckman, and Autumn Cecil each knocked in a deuce.

As a team, Magnolia pulled down 40 rebounds, led by Mallory Chapman with eight, while Standiford hauled in six. The Eagles also had 17 assists in the game, led by Bersiford with five and Ludewig with four. Magnolia made 15 steals in the game with Blatt leading the charge with four and Standiford with three. The Lady Eagles also rejected five Blue Devel shots, led by Cecil’s two swats.

In the jayvee contest, it was all Magnolia, as Dulaney and Anna Gibb each netted 12 points and Cecil tallied nine in a 50-12 victory.

Lady Eagles 50,

Oak Glen 47

The red hot Lady Eagles cashed in on 16-19 charity tosses, while the Lady Bears were only 8-15, in a thrilling 50-47 victory over Oak Glen Jan. 9 inside the MHS HammerDome.

After taking a 15-10 lead after one period of play, the Golden Bears would outscore the Lady Eagles 22-10 in the second stanza and hold a 32-25 advantage at the break.

Magnolia would then overtake the visitors 15-5 in the third period to claim the lead and hold off the Bears in the fourth to secure the victory.

Bersiford paced Magnolia with 15 points that included a pair of bonus bombs, while Mallory and Kelsi Chapman netted 14 and 12 points, respectively. Blatt finished with five markers, while Standiford netted four points. Berisford and Durig each made five thefts, while Mallory Chapman hauled in seven boards and blocked two shots.

Frontier 45,

Lady Eagles 41

The Eagles Mallory Chapman scored 21 points, pulled down six boards, made two steals and rejected two Lady Cougar shots, but it wasn’t enough to get past Frontier, 45-41 in New Matamoras Jan. 13.

The Eagles led 13-12 after one period of play and were on top 24-22 at the break and held a two-point advantage with one period remaining. But, when the final buzzer sounded, the Cougars slipped by for the win.

Berisford and Kelsi Chapman each contributed six markers. Standiford tallied five points, hauled in nine boards, made four steals and blocked a shot. Blatt ended all the Lady Eagle scoring with a deuce.

After beating Frontier in their first meeting, the Lady Eagles will look for the tie breaker on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Boggs Pizza Roundball Classic.

Lady ‘Cats 56,

Valley ‘Jills 47

Paden City’s Myah Charkawi tallied a game-high 24 points, including two buckets from beyond the arc, and converted 8-9 charity tosses to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 56-47 victory over the Valley Lumberjills the VHS Gymnasium Jan. 11.

The ‘Cats outscored the ‘Jills 13-7 in the opening period and went into the locker room up 28-16. However, the Lumberjills fought back and outscored Paden City 31-27 in the second half.

Cydney Blatt followed Charkawi with 12 markers, while Taylor Cosper netted 10 points. In addition, Kayla Hizer netted six points, while Hannah Stanley added three points and Kayla Barker drained a free throw.

For the Lumberjills, Alisha Carter netted a team-high 17 points that included five baskets from beyond the arc, while Madison Arnolds contributed 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double to lead the ‘Jills.

In addition, Karissa Headley and Erin Brown tallied five and four points, respectively, while Kaitlyn Brown netted four points. Sarah Bassett chipped in three points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Paden City tallied 14-25 free throws, while the Lumberjills cashed in on 5-11.

Williamstown 86,

Lady ‘Cats 62

Charkawi scored 25 points, made six steals and pulled down eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to get by the Wiliamstown Yellowjackets 86-62, Jan. 13 inside Bob Burton Gymnasium.

Stanley followed with 13 points, including one bucket from outside the arc, while Cosper dropped in nine markers. Blatt contributed six points and hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds and made eight steals.

In addition, Hizer netted five points, while Kayla Barker and Katie Shreve each tacked on a deuce.

Lady Pilots 59,

Shadyside 30

Lady Pilot Jensen Caretti scored 32 of River’s 59 points in a scrubbing of the Shadyside Lady Tigers, who turned in 30 points Jan. 9 at R. L. Potts Gymnasium.

Landyn Ramsay followed with 11 markers that included three triples, while Abby Caldwell and Mackenzie Marshall shared 10 points and Haylee Bowers scored three points.

Bridgeport 57,

Lady Pilots 54

The Bridgeport Lady Bulldogs took a double-digit lead heading into the final eight minutes of play and held off a late Lady Pilot rally for a 57-54 victory Jan. 12 inside R.L. Potts Gymnasium.

Bowers paced the Pilots with a season-high 21 points that included a bonus bomb, while Caretti followed with 16 markers and Ramsay sank a dozen. Gabby Goudy netted a threeball, while Abby Caldwell sank a deuce.

The Lady Pilots will be on the road for their next four regular season games starting with Buckeye Trail on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.
