Lady ‘Cats Place Second In PCHS Christmas Tournament

After knocking off the Valley Lumberjills 62-44 in the opener of the 2012 Paden City Christmas Tournament, the Lady Wildcats fell 80-43 to Wood County Christian in the championship contest.
In the opener, the ‘Jills went up 12-7 after the first eight minutes, thanks to Madison Arnold’s three baskets and deuces by Sarah Bassett, Erin Brown, and Mel Thomas. Meanwhile, the ‘Cats’ Hannah Stanley nailed a triple and Cydney Blatt netted a deuce and free throw to pace the Wildcats.
In the second period, Stanley torched the Bob Burton Gymnasium nets with a pair of long range bombs, while Kayla Baker dropped in one triple and Myah Charkawi netted 3-4 free throws to help the ‘Cats cling to a 24-16 advantage at the break. Meanwhile, Arnold scored the only two Lumberjill baskets of the period.
In the second half, Paden City outscored the ‘Jills 15-14 before going on a 23-14 run in the final period to get the win.
The Lumberjills drained one more basket than the ‘Cats, while Paden City won it at the line, sinking 19-38 free throws versus 1-5 for the ‘Jills.

Blatt paced the Wildcats with 17 points, while Stanley netted 14 markers and Barker 12 points. In addition, Charkawi and Taylor Cosper evenly split 18 points, while Kayla Hizer and Darien Ritchie each netted a deuce.
Arnold paced the Lumberjills with 12 points, while Alissa Carter, Sarah Bassett, and Cassidy Price each sank three baskets. Karissa Headley netted five points, including a triple, while Erin Brown sank a deuce and a free throw. Megan Martin, Chelsea Underwood, and Melanie Thomas each tallied a deuce.

In the consolation game it was all Tyler Consolidated, beating Valley 80-43. Erin Brown paced the Lumberjills with nine markers, while Arnold and Headley followed with eight points each. Martin followed with five points, including one bucket from downtown, while Thomas and Caitlyn Brown each contributed a pair of jumpers. Price tacked on a deuce, while Underwood swished a charity toss.
Arnold was selected to the all-tournament team.

In the finals it was all Wood County, who snatched a 21-7 first quarter lead and never looked back in handing Paden City its first defeat of the season, 68-30.
Blatt paced the Lady Wildcats with eight markers, while Stanley tickled the twine twice from beyond the arc. Charkawi netted a deuce and a triple, while Hizer contributed five points and pulled down five rebounds.
In addition, Cosper netted two buckets, while Barker, Ritchie, and Chelsea Baker each netted a deuce.
Blatt and Charkawi each earned all-tournament honors.

Paden City will try to get back on track when they host Cameron at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in Bob Burton Gymnasium.
Paden City 64, Hundred 41
Cydney Blatt and Myah Charkawi each contributed a double-double to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 64-41 victory over the Hundred Hornets in a mutual season opener inside the Hornets Nest Dec. 3.
The Lady Hornets raced out to an 11-2 advantage led by a Paige Shriver deuce and triple. But, the Lady ‘Cats closed the gap to 11-9 by the quarter’s end, thanks, in part, to Taylor Cosper’s pair of deuces and Charkawi’s long range three-pointer.
In the second period, Paden City slowly pulled away, outscoring the Hornets 17-7 to take a 26-18 lead at the break. Hannah Stanley scored a pair of baskets and a pair of free throws, while Charkawi swished all four of her free throws. Cydney Blatt started to take her game to the next level, scoring a pair of baskets and controlling the boards. The Lady Hornets’ Lindsay Jones paced the Hornet clan with a threeball.

The third period was all Paden City, as Cosper and Charkawi each recorded a pair of baskets, while Stanley swished a jumper and a basket from beyond the arc to give the visitors a 43-20 lead with one quarter remaining.
For the Hornets, Ashley Miller and Valerie Soles each netted a free throw for Hundred’s only points of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, each team tallied 21 points, with Shriver leading the way for Hundred with a deuce and a threeball, while Jones netted a pair of baskets and a pair of free throws.
For Paden City, Blatt led the fourth quarter charge with four baskets, while Kayla Barker and Darien Ritchie came off the bench to tack on six and five points, respectively.
Blatt scored a game-high 15 points and hauled in 10 boards, while Charkawi netted 13 markers and cleaned the glass of 11 rebounds for the Wildcats. Stanley and Cosper each netted 12 points, while Barker netted six points and Ritchie five.
Kayla Hizer added a free throw for all the Wildcat scoring. Barker also added four steals, four rebounds, and dished out three assists, while Ritchie grabbed five boards and Hizer grabbed four.
Shriver led all Lady Hornets with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Jones netted seven points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out four assists. She also hijacked four basketballs in an all around nice performance.
In addition, Nikki Cunningham scored three baskets, while Meliah Umstead scored four points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot.
Josie Phillips scored three points, while Madeline Goff sank a threeball. Soles and Miller each made a free throw.
Notre Dame 53, Valley 45
Notre Dame outscored the host Valley Lumberjills 19-4 in the third period and held on to defeat the ‘Jills 53-45 Dec. 3.
After trailing by three after one period of play, the Lance Binegar-led Lumberjills, rallied to even the count at 24 heading into the locker room. However, the Lady Irish put Valley away with a 19-4 run to start the second half before the ‘Jills responded with a flurry of baskets in the fourth to make it interesting.
Madison Arnold led the Lumberjills with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, while Karissa Headley netted 10 markers, including two threeballs.
In addition, Erin Brown contributed eight points, while hauling in five boards and blocking three Lady Irish shots. Caitlyn Brown netted six markers, while Sarah Bassett netted four points and Alicia Carter tallied a threeball.
