Longwell Nips Johnson In OV Match Play Event
Brandon Longwell defeated Dave Johnson, 205-199, to win the final Ohio Valley Weekly Match Play qualifier and earn a berth in the 35th Grand Finale at Bruce Lanes, May 11.
Longwell won $50, compliments of Ace Mitchell Bowlers Mart, this week’s sponsor. Jay Yeager was the two-game high qualifier with games of 185, 216 and 56 handicap for a 457 total.
Longwell slipped by Yeager 204-203 in one semifinal, while Johnson eliminated defending champion Kevin Lude, 230-177, in the other semifinal. Johnson won the overall points title, sponsored by Buddy Light Accounting, with 1,055 points, a tournament record.
Lil Miller won the Doris Westfall Performance Award by finishing as the highest woman on the point list (14). Dave Johnson won the Arkle Costanzo Memorial Award by competing in the most weekly events, with 35. Mike Hall Sr. won the Chup Robinson Sportsmanship Award, while Scott Shreve, Ace Mitchell’s Bowlers Mart, won the Rick Doty Achievement Award, symbolic of the individual business most involved in the success of the tournament.
The tournament paid out approximately $5,000 this year, pushing the tournament total to over $307,000 all time.
This year’s champion will win $750, compliments of tournament sponsors Miller Lite, Capital Beverage and Buddy Light Accounting. The finale is scheduled for May 18 at 6 p.m.
Kevin Lude, the defending champion, will try to win the finale back-to-back for the first time since Dud Snider did the trick in 1988-89 and 1989-90.
The Grand Finale field is set with Dave Johnson the Points Champion and five-time winner heading the field of 25.
