John Marshall 10, Magnolia 5

The John Marshall Monarchs ended the Magnolia Blue Eagle Baseball Team’s 19-game winning streak with a 10-5 victory at the Mullett Baseball Field Complex April 29.

The Monarchs got things rolling with a one-out walk followed by a double. After a single that scored two, Eagle hurler Chandler Sapp struck out the next two Monarch batters.

However, Magnolia’s first two batters – Sapp and Ryan Walton – hit back-to-back solid singles up the pike, and, after a strike out, Zach Wilhoite drilled one down the third base line that bounced off the fielder’s glove and allowed Walton to score. Then, a Tanner Hanna fielder’s choice would plate Sapp to even the score at two.

Neither team scored in the second, but in the third Magnolia loaded the bases without a hit, prompting Magnolia Head Coach Dave Cisar to send Hanna to the mound in relief.

John Marshall greeted Hanna with a sacrifice fly and a single that would push the Monarch lead to 4-2. Hanna would sit down the final two batters on strikes without any further damage.

Magnolia worked the Monarchs for four more walks and four more errors. However, the Monarchs would get two more runs in the fourth, starting with a pair of walks, two hit batsmen, and a two-run double to grab a 6-2 lead.

The Monarchs added one in the fifth on a solo home run and finished the game with three runs in the sixth on a three-run blast.

The Blue Eagle Cardiac Kids would make one last run in the seventh to keep their winning streak intact. Kyle Elliott smacked an RBI double, Wilhoite hit a two-run shot that struck the scoreboard, and Hanna blasted a stand-up double. But, the game ended with the bases juiced and a strike out.

Sapp and Hanna combined for eight strike outs, five walks, five hit batsmen, and one Blue Eagle error. Walton, Sapp, and Grant Cain each had singles, while Hanna and Elliott doubled, and Wilhoite homered to pace the Eagles’ offense.

The Eagles will play for the OVAC Class-AAA championship Friday against Linsly at 7:30 p.m. in Toronto and then move on to sectional play next week.

Magnolia 6, Shenandoah 0

The Magnolia Blue Eagles won 6-0 over Shenandoah in the OVAC semifinals April 27 in New Martinsville, with Magnolia scoring four runs with two outs in the fifth inning and Kyle Elliott twirling a three-hit shutout

After getting the first two Zep batters out in the opening frame, the Eagles committed their only miscue on a grounder. Elliott then gave up a single, but retired the next batter to get out of the first frame without any further damage.

In the home half, Ryan Walton worked a walk, stole second, and then moved to third on a ground out. Elliott reached first on an error that would score Walton. He then swiped second, but the next two Eagle batters were put out to end the first with Magnolia on top, 1-0.

From this point on, Elliott was lights-out on the mound. He would sit down the Zeps in order in the second frame and would give up a harmless seeing-eye single in the third before holding Shenandoah hitless the rest of the way.

However, the Shenandoah hurler was also throwing blanks, limiting the powerful Blue Eagle bats to only an Elliott single and a Chase Miller walk in the fourth, while striking out four Blue Eagle batters.

To open the fifth, two consecutive Magnolia batters struck out before the Blue Eagle bats came alive. Walton started a rally with a stand-up double and Chandler Sapp brought Walton home on a rope down the right-field line for a single.

Sapp stole second and would score on an Elliott single to right center. Soren Shade replaced Elliott on the bases and stole second, then scampered home on a Zach Wilhoite single to centerfield. Tyler Anderson pitch-ran for Wilhoite and made his way to third on a Tanner Hanna single and would score on a Miller single. Chase Cain drew a walk before Shenandoah got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Magnolia would score an insurance run in the sixth that began with a Drew Keller walk. Keller was replaced on the bases and, after an error and another walk, Elliott plated the final Blue Eagle tally on a fielder’s choice.

In the top of the seventh, Elliott got the first batter out on a harmless grounder to second and sat down his 11th and 12th batter to get the nod on the hill. Elliott helped himself at the plate with a single and three RBIs, while Walton added a double and a single. Sapp, Miller, and Wilhoite each brought home a run with singles, while Hanna ended the eight-hit Blue Eagle attack with a single.

“Our top 4-5 guys really came through with timely hits like they have all year,” said Magnolia skipper Dave Cisar. “If its not that, it’s a homer on a big error. But, today it was timely hitting and I’m really proud of my kids.”

Magnolia 12, Oak Glen 3

The Eagles started out on fire, scoring nine runs in the first frame and coasted to a 12-3 victory over the Oak Glen Golden Bears April 25 in New Cumberland.

Zach Wilhoite scattered seven hits from the hill and pounded out a single and a double, plating four base runners to lead Magnolia to its 18th straight victory. Grant Cain, Tanner Hanna, and Chandler Sapp each added multiple hits for the Eagles, while Jake Starkey and Drew Keller smacked a double and a triple, respectively.

Magnolia 7, Cameron 0

Kyle Elliott smacked a single and doubled twice, while Chase Miller, Chandler Sapp, and Eric Mason combined on a two-hit shutout to lead Magnolia to a 7-0 victory over the Cameron Dragons for Magnolia’s 21st win of the season April 23 at Mullett Field.

Miller and Sapp combined to strike out 13 batters and walk three from the mound, while Zach Wilhoite brought home four teammates with a pair of singles. Drew Keller plated one with a single for the Blue.
