Eagles Finish Second In Tournament

By Staff | Mar 6, 2013

The seventh grade girls’ basketball team at New Martinsville School finished the season with a 4-6 record. They lost to Bellaire by seven points in a tough first-round loss in the Bellaire tournament.

The leading scorer was Logan Spencer with 12 points. Others sending up points were Alex Berger, four markers; Lauren Anderson with two points; and Kenna Petin with a deuce.

The eighth grade team finished its season at 10-5. They won their first-round game in the Bellaire tournament against Bellaire 42-22. Top scorers were Kelsi Chapman, 14 points; Jordan Delaney, nine points; and Taylor Ludewig, who put in seven markers.

The team won its second-round game against Barnesville 45-24. Top scorers in the contest were Chapman, 14 points; Ludewig, 10; and Autumn Cecil, seven points.

In the championship game, the team lost to Buckeye Trail by two points in overtime, 40-38. Top scorers were Chapman with 12 markers; Ludewig, 10 points; Bailey Estep chipped in six points; Kristen Massey, four points; Cecil, four points; and Delaney, a deuce.

Cecil and Estep really stepped it up in the fourth quarter to help NMS get back in the game and Tylar Seckman provided great energy off the bench, as well.

Ludewig had a shot roll around on the rim at the end of regulation that would have won the game. With about 23 seconds left in OT, Massey set a pick for Chapman, who made a big three-point basket from well beyond the arc to tie the game. Cecil had a shot fall short at the end of OT that would have tied that game.

“The girls played extremely hard and never quit,” said Head Coach Chad West. “I couldn’t have been more proud of their effort. They played their hearts out!”
