‘Jacks Swat Hornets, 68-57

By Staff | Feb 27, 2013

Tyler Hayes scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Valley Lumberjacks to a 68-57 victory over the Hundred Hornets on Senior Nite, Feb. 20 in Pine Grove.

The Hornets took a one-point lead after one period of play, led by Chris Varner and Rusty Morris, who scored 10 of their team’s 14 points.

However, a stifling “box and one” Lumberjack defense shut down Morris, the Hornets’ leading scorer, in the second period. Hayes would connect on three deuces and a threeball to help the ‘Jacks take a 29-20 halftime advantage.

In the third period, both teams played extremely well, but when the dust settled, the Lumberjack lead had increased to 14 points.

However, Hundred worked around Valley’s defense and Morris netted a pair of threes, twos, and charity tosses, while teammate Kirk Shriver sank a pair of baskets from beyond the arc to make the game a little more interesting.

Hayes would answer with three deuces and Jack Wells netted a pair of deuces and free throws, while four other teammates sank perimeter deuces to keep the Hornets at bay for the victory.

Hayes added six rebounds and dished out five assists, while Kocher and Wells each garnered double-doubles for the Lumberjacks. Triston Kocher scored 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds, while Wells sank a dozen markers and grabbed a game-high 15 boards. In addition, Troy Hubbard netted six points, while Peyton Palmer added a deuce.

Morris tallied a game-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while blocking four shots to pace the Hornets. Varner and Shriver tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively. Andrew King followed with seven points, while Holden Moore sank four and Courtland Armstrong drained two points.
