River Grapplers Trounce Blue Eagles In Dual Match
The River Pilot Wrestling Team started the new year in style, whipping the Magnolia Blue Eagles in fashion, 58-18 inside the MHS HammerDome Jan. 2.
After splitting a pair of exhibition matches and a double forfeit, the Eagles’ Doug Riter (113 lbs.) turned the tables on the Pilots’ Chase Schultheis early in the second period with a pin.
The Pilots scored a forfeit when Josh Stewart (120 lbs.) didn’t have an Eagle to battle. Then it was Joseph Layman (126 lbs.) getting the Big Blue back on top with a pin fall over the Luke Gillies late in the first period.
That was all she wrote for the home-standing Eagles for awhile, as the next seven Pilot wrestlers had their arms raised in picking up a win.
Pilot Loren Thomas (132 lbs.) started the blitz with a pin in the first period over the Eagles’ J. T. Stillwagoner. Then Chase Young (138 lbs.) won by forfeit before teammate Jordan Sapp (145 lbs.) outscored Paden McConaughey 8-1.
Later, Pilot Devon Talbott (152 lbs.) took the Eagles’ Gage Deem to a technical fall with a hard-fought 17-2 victory.
Then came the match of the night, as the Pilots’ Bailey Reusser (160 lbs.) and the Eagles’ Garrett Woofter gave the huge wrestling crowd their money’s worth with a thrilling 13-7 Reusser victory.
River Local’s Kole Smith (170 lbs.) took care of Blue Eagle Joey Kelly with a pin fall, while teammate Dakota Dunn (182 lbs.) outscored Magnolia’s Jacob Rabel, 17-0, for a technical fall.
Magnolia’s Jared Wright (195 lbs.) manhandled the Pilots’ Brett Rosen with a pin fall midway in the first period to stop the drought.
In the final match of the night, the Pilots’ Hank Goble (220 lbs.) scored a pin fall over Brian Wilson.
Earlier in the match, River’s Joseph Dawson (285 lbs.) scored a pin fall over Magnolia’s Alex Newman.
The Pilots and Blue Eagles will both be competing in the annual OVAC?Wrestling Tournament at WesBanco Arena, Jan. 17-19.
