Lady ‘Cats Hold Off ‘Jills

Four Lady ‘Cats scored in double figures – with two earning double-doubles – to lead Paden City to a 63-54 victory over the Valley Lumberjills in Pine Grove Dec. 28.

Logan and Taylor Cosper scored 14 of the ‘Cats’ first-period 20 points, while the Lumberjills swished 7-10 shots that included a threeball by Alisha Carter to pull to within one point heading into the second period of exciting girls’ basketball.

The Lady ‘Cats started to pull away in the second period, led by Lynnsie Parsons with six points and Logan Cosper with a deuce and a triple to go on top 37-30 at intermission.

The Lumberjills came out of the locker room on fire, scoring 19 points, while their defense held Paden City to 10 markers. In the quarter, Karrisa Headley put in six markers, while Sarah Bassett and Samantha Thomas each responded with a pair of deuces to take a 49-47 lead at the end of three periods.

However, six different Paden City players put up 16 points versus five markers from the ‘Jills to gain the win. Cydney Blatt paced the ‘Cats with six points, while Myah Charkawi tallied a deuce and a charity toss. Parsons, Logan and Taylor Cosper each netted two points, while Kayla Barker swished a free throw for the visitors.

Logan Cosper scored a game-high 18 points, while Parsons followed closely with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Parsons also contributed a game-high six assists and made three steals. Also earning her first double-double of the season was Blatt with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Cosper delivered 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

In addition, Charkawi just missed out on a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring eight points, while Barker swished her only point from the free throw line.

Both teams scored 24 goals, with Valley netting three baskets from long range, to only one for Paden City. However, the ‘Cats tallied 13-18 free throws, while the ‘Jills netted only 3-4 that proved to be the difference.

Sarah Bassett and Brittany Sivert each recorded double-doubles, with Bassett marking up 13 points and hauling in 10 rebounds, while Sivert netted 12 points and gathered 12 rebounds to pace the Lumberjill attack.

In addition, Alisha Carter netted 11 points, while Samantha Thomas and Headley tallied 10 and eight points, respectively.

Paden City will open the New year with a home game against East Richland on Jan. 4 at 6 p.m., while the ‘Jills will travel to Harman on Jan. 5 for a 3 p.m. tip.
