The New Martinsville School Wrestling Team opened the 2012-13 season at the Martins Ferry Invitational and came away with a solid sixth place out of 19 schools from as far away as Columbus and Youngstown.

Placing for the Eagles were: Riley Nice, 104 pound champion; Caleb Nice, 160 lb. champion; Kaleb Simpkins, 110 lb. third place; Jack Booth, 98 lb. fourth place; Kyler Cecil, 86 lb. fourth place; Clay Adams, 128 lb. fifth place; and Joel Hatfield, 172 lb. fifth place.

The New Martinsville Middle School wrestling team spent their second Saturday of the young season at the Cameron Invitational on Dec. 8 and came away with a solid fourth place finish in the 12-team field. Though filling only eight of the 15 weight classes, every Blue Eagle did their school proud by placing in the top four and bringing home an award.

Winning first place championships were: Riley Nice (102 pounds), Caleb Nice (155), and John Albertson (190). Just missing a championship was Joel Hatfield (171) who made the finals in only his second competition. Joel lost in the championship match, settling for second place honors.

Also placing were Kaleb Simpkins (110) and Clay Adams (123) who brought home third place hardware. Finishing fourth were Kyler Cecil (84) and Hunter Partridge (128).

This was the second championship of the young season for eighth graders Riley Nice and Caleb Nice. They both won top awards on Dec. 1 at the 18 team Martins Ferry Invitational. They both sport undefeated records at this point in the young season.

The Eagles’ next challenge will be at Bridge Street Middle on Thursday and then close out the first semester with the always tough Beallsville Invitational on Saturday.
