Lady Hornets And ‘Jills Battle To The End
Hornet center Katie Tennant tallied her third triple of the season,-14 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots-to lead Hundred to a thrilling 52-50 victory over the Valley Lumberjills Dec. 17 in Pine Grove.
Valley took a four point lead to open the game, but the Lady Hornets’ Paige Shriver netted a pair of outside jumpers, while Oshana Topp and Lindsay Jones each recorded baskets from beyond the arc to counter the hot shooting of the ‘Jills Brittany Sivert, who tallied 10 of her game-high 22 points after one period of play for a 15-13 Hundred Hornet lead.
Karissa Headley teamed with Sivert to score 10 of the ‘Jills second period points, but three balls by Jones and Topp and two pointers by Tennant, Shriver, and Emily Ebert gave the visitors a 29-25 half time lead.
The three point shooting of the Hornets’ Jones, who drilled two of her game-high five triples, pushed Hundred’s lead to 41-33 after three periods of play.
After falling behind in double-digits, Valley put on an up-in-your-face man-to-man press and evened the count late in the game. But, the Hornets added a late Shriver deuce, and Valley got off a pair of last second shots that rimed off the board.
The Lumberjills made 10-27 free throws, while the Hornets converted 5-15 that proved to be the difference in the outcome.
In addition to Tennant’s triple-double, Jones netted a team-high 15 points, including five three pointers, while Topp netted 11, including a pair of triples. Shriver tallied eight points, while Ebert netted four points, five rebounds, and six assists.
Besides Sivert’s 22 points, Headley, Sarah Bassett, and Samantha Thomas each recorded eight points, while Alisha Carter tallied a basket from beyond the arc and a charity toss.
“It’s a shame someone had to lose this game,” said retired veteran coaches Larry Weekley and Mike Ray.
