Blue Eagles Split Two

Despite Mallory Chapman’s second straight double-double, the Magnolia Lady Eagles fell 70-34 to Monroe Central Dec. 6 in the MHS HammerDome. Chapman’s 12 rebounds and 14 points included three baskets from beyond the arch.
Magnolia fell behind 21-8 in the opening period and was behind 35-19 at the break. The Lady Seminoles caught a 22-8 roll to open the second half and ended the night with a 13-7 run to gain the nod.
Besides Chapman, Kiera Standiford tallied eight markers, while Audrey Gibb tacked on four points. In addition, Jasmine Litton contributed three points, Abby Durig and Anna Gibb each knocked down a deuce, while Katie Blatt netted a free throw.
On the bright side, Chapman hauled in 12 of Magnolia’s 18 offensive rebounds, while Blatt dished out five of Magnolia’s 11 assists. Chapman and Blatt blocked seven of the teams’ 10 blocks, while Chapman, Blatt and Durig each made two of the team’s nine steals.

Magnolia got back on the winning track when they posted a second-half comeback to defeat the Beallsville Blue Devils 70-66 in overtime, Dec. 8 in Blue Devil territory.
Magnolia fell behind 20-13 after one period and 36-33 at the break before knotting the game after 32 minutes of basketball.
In the fourth period, the Eagles doubled up the Devils, 8-4, in the overtime period to gain the hard-fought victory.
Freshman Grace Berisford paced the Lady Eagles with 22 markers, that included four baskets from beyond the arc. Chapman followed with 20 points and seven rebounds while Standiford drilled 7-14 from the floor and made her only free throw for 15 points, Blatt netted eight points, pulled down five rebounds, made seven steals and dished out nine of the team’s 19 assists. Standiford also paced the Eagles with two of five blocked shots.
In addition Audrey Gibb netted three points, while Cierra Fowler contributed a deuce.
The Eagles’ next game is at noon Saturday in Weirton.
