The Valley Lumberjacks scored 29 first quarter points and went on to claim victory in the Wetzel County Back Yard Brawl Sept. 7, beating the Hundred Hornets at Cosgray Field in Hundred.

Valley quickly took a Trey Street 57-yard run and turned it into a nine-yard Spencer Mason touchdown. Kale Lloyd kicked the PAT to give the visitors a 7-0 lead, seconds into the contest.

Hundred mounted a nice ground attack on its first series, moving the ball down inside the ‘Jacks’ 30 before a pair of penalties and several bad snaps caused the Hornets to punt. Valley took advantage and marched down the field, ending with a Street 48-yard touchdown run.

After the ensuing kickoff, the ‘Jacks would get a safety as another bad snap went into the endzone for a safety. And, before you could whistle a tune, Valley was up 16-0.

Hundred shot themselves in the foot as an illegal forward pass neutralized a 70-yard kickoff return into the endzone by Chris Varner.

Mason carried countless Hornets for big yardage on Hundred’s next possession. But, Street would cap off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown scamper. Mason would tack on a 19-yard TD run to end the first quarter onslaught.

You would not see any more of Mason or Street in the second quarter as the Lumberjack reserves would get some playing time. Both the Hornets and the Lumberjacks wouldn’t score. Instead, several nice runs by Varner, fullback J.P. Hennen, and Brandon White moved the chains for Hundred. Several runningbacks from Valley also moved the chains.

Neither team scored in the second period, but Hundred lost Hennen to a shoulder injury. However, the ‘Jacks would score thrice in the second half.

Hundred scored its lone touchdown late in the game. After moving the ball from its own 30 yard line on a pair of long passes from Armstrong to Varner, Brandon White would take it home for a 10-yard TD run. The point-after kick was blocked.

White led all Hornet ball carriers with 104 yards rushing and a TD, while Hennen accumulated 11 yards on his only carry of the game. Varner lost 10 yards on five sacks. However, he caught two passes for 50 yards, while White, Isaac Efaw, Courtland Armstrong, and Logan Kuhn each caught passes. Varner passed for 56 yards, while Armstrong tacked on 74 yards through the air.

On defense, Shawn Derby paced the Hornets with 10 tackles, with Varner, Efaw, and White each making seven stops.

Valley’s ground game accumulated 418 yards, with Street leading 12 Lumberjack ball carriers with 137 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries. Mason racked up 63 yards on six totes and a pair of TD runs, while Midcap and TC Long each gained 56 yards. Lloyd added 55 yards, while Taylor Bates and Collin Bates teamed for 41 yards. In addition, Trey Smith, Hayden Lancaster, Colton Ring, John Koontz, and Tristen Kocher each added positive yardage.

Kocher, completed 2-3 pass all to Troy Hubbard for 42 yards.

Defensively, the ‘Jacks’ Long, Kocher, and Midcap each made eight tackles, while Cole Sell dropped seven Hornets. Kocher and Chase West each added interceptions, while Long and Wesley Dulaney each made two quarterback sacks. Midcap and Luke Martin each recorded a QB sack. The shortest guy on the field – 5’5, 125-pound Joey Koontz – blocked a kick for the Lumberjacks.

Valley will entertain Notre Dame Friday at 7:30 p.m. on an alumni weekend.
