Lady Eagles Fare Well At WVU Camp

By Staff | Jun 27, 2012

The Magnolia High School Girls’ Basketball Team enjoyed another successful team camp at West Virginia University June 22-23 weekend, earning a 4-2 record in pool play games played Friday and Saturday.

The team won its first two games in Sunday competition, before being knocked out in the semi-final round by Virginia’s Loudon High School.

“This was great team-building experience for our girls,” said Jim Blatt, who coached the team all weekend. “We were the last West Virginia team left. After the last game, I walked down the hall to do my post-game talk with the team.

“Looking around, I saw girls with knee braces, wrapped ankles, wrapped fingers, bruises, and scratches. I looked up expecting to see tears; instead I saw nine smiling faces. These young ladies made New Martinsville proud, and they knew it. They left their hearts on the floor. “

The highlight of the weekend was the final pool game against Maryland’s Boonsboro High School. At the time, Boonsboro was undefeated, having won their first five games. The Eagles won the game by sinking two foul shots with only nine seconds left on the clock.

During the camp, the Lady Eagles had the opportunity to play two games on the Coliseum Floor and one game in the new WVU Basketball Practice Facility.

“The WVU staff gave the team and parents a complete tour of the facility. After seeing the many amenities, I have no doubt that Head Basketball Coach Mike Carey has the women’s program headed in the right direction.

“It is just awesome and a great recruiting tool. It was an experience of a lifetime for our girls. Thank you Coach Carey,” said Blatt.

Special thanks to Padyn Ludewig who helped coach and stayed with the team day and night.
