Eagles One Win Away From State
The Magnolia Blue Eagles pounded out eight hits, including a Zach Wilhoite two-run home run, and pitcher Kyle Elliott tossed a two-hitter to knock off the Oak Glen Golden Bears 6-2 in the Region I Semifinal on the Field of Dreams in New Manchester May 21.
The Eagles lost their two previous contests to the Bears during the season, but it’s mighty tough to beat a Dave Cisar-coached team three straight times, especially when it counts the most.
Cisar and former MHS baseball standout Trey Barcus, now assistant baseball coach, have a team dominated by underclassmen, including three starting sophomores. There are only two seniors on the squad.
However, good things happen by staying the course with the winningest baseball coach in the valley.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings when the Eagles’ bats caught fire. Starting with an Elliott triple, Wilhoite would clear the bases with a long home run over the fence to push Magnolia on top 2-0.
The Eagles crossed the plate four more times in the fifth to break the game wide open. The Golden Bears wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, besides one hit and one unearned run.
Elliott would then close the chapter on the Oak Glen 17-12 season and help send the mighty Eagles to the Regional championship game tonight, 5 p.m., atPoint Pleasant, facing their Big Blacks who defeated Ritchie 10-7.
Wilhoite paced the Eagles with a single and a two-run home run, while Elliott added a double and a triple.
In addition, Tanner Hanna plated two runs with a pair of singles, while Chandler Sapp and Jayson Keller each drilled a single.
Elliott struck out two and walked five to get the win from the rubber. He gave up only two hits and two runs, with one being unearned.
