Lady Pilots Win Sectional Game
The River Lady Pilots won their first co-sectional crown in 11 years May 11, as they defeated the Shadyside Lady Tigers 2-1 at Shadyside.
The Pilots trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Pilots used some two-out lightning to do their damage.
It all started with a Monica Curtis walk with one out. Curtis advanced to third on two Shadyside wild pitches and went home a blooper by freshman Haylee Bowers that fell in. Bowers reached first and continued home when pitcher Renae Riley smacked a ball that deflected off the pitcher’s glove and sent it into shallow left field.
Head Coach Dave West sent Gabby Gaudy in relief, but the Lady Tigers drew a walk with one out in the seventh. The next Shady batter grounded out to a fielder’s choice and Gaudy sat down the next batter to end the game in River’s favor
Bowers’ RBI of Curtis was her 61st of the season, catapulting her into eighth place of the Ohio state RBI record and just four RBI short of seventh place.
Riley and Gaudy combined to sit down 10 and walk one. Goudy got the win from the mound.
With that win, River moves on to the district semifinals where they played Strasburg Tuesday with no results available at press time at New Philadelphia. Strasburg is a perennial Division IV powerhouse and the state’s number one ranked small school team.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Pilots defeated Frontier Local 11-2 in the Division IV sectional tournament May 8 at Shadyside. Riley went two innings for the Pilots as she struck out three and gave up three singles. But, after a rain delay, Gaudy finished the game.
Mackenzie Marshall had a base-cleaning triple and a sac-fly for four RBI to lead a 13-hit attack for the Pilots.
