Lady Eagles Get First Win Of Season; Take Down Ritchie Lady Rebels, 69-43

The Magnolia Lady Eagles used a 22-2 run in the second period against host Ritchie County Jan. 17 to help them get their first victory of the season, a 69-43 victory over the Ritchie County Lady Rebels

Magnolia held a modest 16-13 lead before exploding for 22 points in the second period. They held the Lady Rebels to a deuce and grabbed a 38-15 lead heading into the locker room at the break.

Both teams put up a 14 spot in the third period and the Lady Eagles would outscore the Rebels 17-14 in the final eight minutes.

MHS freshman Katie Blatt led the Eagle charge with a game-high 18 points, including one basket from beyond the arc, and dished off five assists. Mallory Chapman put together a fine performance, scoring 15 points, including a pair of three-point buckets; grabbed 11 rebounds; and passed out five assists, while Dallas Mullett netted a baker’s dozen.

In addition, Jasmine Litton just missed getting a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Audrey Gibb contributed eight markers, while Kiera Standiford tacked on six points.

The Magnolia junior varsity team took the Lady Rebels to the very end before dropping a 38-30 verdict. Kacie Jo Brown paced the Lady Eagles with eight points.

Both the varsity and junior varsity teams will host Monroe Central Jan. 26, with the jv tip getting underway at 6 p.m.

Magnolia 37, Weir 46

The Lady Eagles fell behind 20-13 after one period of non-stop action against Weir Jan. 19, but couldn’t get the baskets and fell 46-37 in Rider territory.

No Magnolia players hit in double figures, but Jasmine Litton and Mallory Chapman each scored eight points to pace the Lady Eagles offense. In addition, Katie Blatt and Kiera Standiford each netted six points. Dallas Mullet was held to four points, while Audrey Gibb netted three markers.

Point Pleasant 53,

Magnolia 43

Chapman scored a game-high 18 points, including one basket from beyond the arc, but it wasn’t enough to get by Point Pleasant, who prevailed 53-43 in the Class-AA Region One Girls Basketball Challenge at Tyler Consolidated Jan. 21.

The Lady Black Knights held a one-point advantage after the first eight minutes of play, but the Eagles stormed back to take a 25-24 lead at the break.

The Knights put the Eagles away in the second half, outscoring Magnolia, 28-17 to get the win.

Mullett followed Chapman with 14 markers, including a triple, while Blatt contributed four points. In addition, Gibb and Brown each netted a deuce, while Destiny Yoho, Standiford, and Litton each knocked down a free throw.

Shadyside 69, Magnolia 43

After losing their first meeting to Shadyside by 66 points, 101-35, Magnolia played the defending Division IV state semifinalist tough, but fell, 69-43.

The Lady Eagles, behind 40-18 at the break, scored 25 points and held the Lady Tigers to 29 points in the second half.

Chapman scored a team-high 17 points and snatched nine rebounds, while Litton added seven markers and hauled in seven boards. Gibb came off the bench to add six points and eight rebounds, while Mullett tallied five markers and made two steals.

In addition, Blatt and Standiford each totaled three points, while Brown netted a deuce.

The Lady Eagles will host Monroe Central, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. and Tyler Consolidated Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
