Lady Eagles Working Hard For First Victory

Sophie Kinnard paced three double-digit Lady Knight scorers to beat Magnolia, 66-51, in the Tyler Consolidated Roundball Tournament, Jan. 12 at Kidwell.
The Lady Knights controlled the tip and quickly scored a bucket, but Mallory Chapman swished a deuce for Magnolia to knot the game at two.
Tyler made two shots on goal to retake the lead. After a pair of Blue Eagle misses, the Silver Knights worked the ball around and netted a basket to give them a 6-2 lead.
After a Katie Blatt miss, Tyler went long distance, but missed everything, and Magnolia took over and Lady Eagle Jasmine Litton scored off an assist by Kiera Standiford. However, Consolidated would get two more shots on goal, with the second one finding its mark to give the hosts an 8-4 lead.
A basket by Standiford pulled Magnolia to within three points when she converted 1-2 free throws. After the Knights missed a pair of free throws, Magnolia’s Dallas Mullett hooked up with Litton at the top of the key for an Eagle basket to pull her team to within a point of the hosts.

But, Tyler got two more chances to score, with the second one finding its mark from beyond the arch to push its lead to 11-7.
Mullett quickly answered with a deuce, Litton made a steal and dished it off to Mullett, who again nailed a jumper to knot the game at 11-11. After a Tyler time out, Standiford pulled down a nice rebound and dished it off to Chapman who tickled the twine from long range to give Magnolia its first lead of the game at 14-11. After a Tyler long range air ball, both teams would turn the ball over on miscues.
But, back-to-back Silver Knight trifectas gave them a 17-14 lead after one period of play. The second period was all Silver, as the Lady Knights talled 16 markers, while holding the Eagles to only five points in the quarter. At intermission, Tyler held a 33-19 advantage.
The Eagles turned the ball over seven times in the second period, with the Knights taking 10 points off the miscues.
Chapman opened the second half with a deuce, followed by a Knight turnover. After a pair of misses by both teams, Magnolia turned the ball over, but Tyler returned the favor. Lady Eagle Litton made Tyler pay with a nice bucket from the paint. Audrey Gibb made a nice pass to Blatt, who made a basket to pull the Eagle score a little closer. After a pair of Knight charity tosses, Magnolia missed a pair of opportuinities to score, but gained a point on a Blatt free throw.

After the Knights called a time out, they would miss two baskets, but Gibb scored a deuce for Magnolia then set up Mullett for another deuce.
However, the Lady Knights answered with a triple from the corner to push their lead to 10 at 40-30. Chapman scored for Magnolia, but Tyler then knocked in a floater to regain a 10-point advantage. Blatt then went coast-to-coast before the Knights tacked on another long ball.
The Eagles scored three baskets – by Standiford, Blatt, and Chapman – to pull the Eagles closer, 45-40, with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Tyler would outscore the Eagles 21-11 in the fourth period to gain the victory. The Knights were shooting the lights out in the fourth and Magnolia would play in the dark, literally, for two-and-a-half minutes before the lights came back on.
But, it wouldn’t have mattered. The Knights bent, but they didn’t break. The Eagles would turn the ball over too much and the Knights converted on those errors. Magnolia used a lot of energy to get back into the game, playing well enough that they should have won. But on this night it would be all Consolidated.

Chapman tallied a team-high 17 points, including one from beyond the arc, while Blatt tallied 10 markers and grabbed eight boards to lead Magnolia. Litton, coming off the bench, netted nine points and pulled down nine boards, while Mullett contributed six points. Standiford followed with five points and 14 rebounds, while Gibb netted four points and dished off three assists.
