WVU Dominates Clemson Tigers In Orange Bowl

The West Virginia University Mountaineers scored three times in the last 2:29 of the second quarter on their way to victory over the Clemson Tigers, 70-33, in the Discover Orange Bowl Jan. 4 in Miami.

The Tigers struck first with a 68-yard TD run and tacked on the PAT to make it 0-7 Tigers with 9:33 to go in the first. West Virginia scored on a four-yard Shawn Alston run and Tyler Bitancurt added the PAT with 6:54 left on the first-period clock.

Clemson struck again with a 27-yard TD pass and added the PAT to go up 14-7 with 4:38 to go in the first. West Virginia went right back down the field and scored an eight-yard pass from Geno Smith to Tavon Austin, with Bitancurt adding the PAT point after.

Clemson would get a 42-yard field goal with less then a minute to go in the first as they took a 17-14 lead in a game that looked like it was going to be a battle of who had the ball last.

The Mountaineers were the first to score in the second frame with a Smith-to-Austin 27-yard pass and extra point from Bitancurt to inch WVU ahead 21-17 with 13:25 left on the ticker.

With Clemson in possession inside the WVU five yard line, the Tigers were stripped at the one and Darwen Cook raced 99 yards the other way for a score – taking out the Orange Bowl Mascot at the end of the play. Bitancurt added the PAT to push WVU’s lead to 28-17 10:28 to go in the second.

The Tigers got a 43-yard field goal with 4:49 to go in the second, cutting Clemson’s deficit to eight points. WVU got a seven-yard run from Smith and another PAT from Bitancurt to go up 35-20 with 2:29 to go in the second.

West Virginia scored two more times on Clemson turnovers in the final minutes of the second half, which ended 49-20, Mountaineers.

WVU got the ball to start the second half. After a few plays, Smith found high school teammate Stedman Bailey for a six-yard TD pass and Bitancurt was true on the extra point. West Virginia appeared to have the game put away, 56-20, with 12:35 left in the third.

However, the ‘Eers struck gold again when Smith found Austin for a 37-yard TD catch, putting WVU up 63-20 after Bitancurt’s reliable point after.

The Tigers got a 28-yard aerial score late in the third, but the two point conversion was no good.

In the fourth quarter, WVU scored when Geno Smith threw for an Orange Bowl record sixth TD to Willie Millhouse from seven yards out. Bitancurt’s point after ended West Virginia scoring in the game. The Tigers got the last points on the board with a four-yard run with a lateral with over a minute to go in the game. Clemson made good on its PAT to end the game 70-33.
