Lady Eagles Start Season 0-3

Wheeling Central 68,

Magnolia 32

The Magnolia Lady Blue Eagles tipped off their 2011 campaign on Dec. 7. By starting two freshman against the Wheeling Central Lady Marion Knights at the 13th Street gymnasium in Wheeling. However, the Knights were rude as they sent the Eagles home with a convincing 68-32 victory.

The Eagles had an early 4-2 lead when Freshman Katie Blatt hit two free throws. It was tied at 6-6 until the Maroon Knights put themselves ahead for good by ending the quarter on a 19-4 run to go up 25-10 after the first quarter. It was the same story in the second quarter as the Knights outscored the Eagles 21-6 to go up 46-16 at the half.

In the third quarter the Knights slowed down their scoring output but still managed to outscore the Lady Eagles 12-7. After three quarters of play the score was 58-23. In the fourth quarter the Knights once again outscored the Eagles by the score of 10-9, which made the finale score 68-32.

Stats and scoring for the Eagles: Mallory Chapman, 10 points; Kiara Standiford, 7 points; Audrey Gibb and Dallas Mullet, evenly split eight points; Alivia Melott and Katie Blatt, three points each; and Destiny Yoho, 1 point.

The Eagles shot 12-25 from the free throw line and 10 of 46 from the field.

The Knights out rebounded the Eagles 42-33. The Eagles committed 20 turnover compared to the Knights 13.

Monroe Central 68,

Magnolia 31

On Dec. 9 at Skyview Elementary School in Woodsfield the Monroe Central Lady Seminoles jumped out to a 18-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in defeating the Magnolia Lady Blue Eagles 68-31.

After the first eight minutes of play the score was 18-6. And the ‘Noles once again put up 18 points in the second quarter while holding the Eagles to five points to take a commanding 36-11 lead into the locker room. The scores in the third and fourth quarters were exactly the same 16-10 in favor of the ‘Noles as the defeated the Eagles 68-31.

Stats and scores for the Eagles: Mallory Chapman, 19 points; Katie Blatt, six points; Dallas Mullet, four points; and Jasmine Litton, two points.

The Eagles shot 8-22 from the free throw line while the ‘Noles shot 11-17 from the charity strip.

Union Local 56,

Magnolia 32

In their home opener on Saturday the Magnolia Lady Eagles led the Union Local Lady Jets 8-5 after the first quarter. However, the Jets outscored the Eagles 51-24 the rest of the way and came away with a 56-32 victory.

The Eagles led 8-5 after the first quarter, but were outscored 15-6 by the Jets in the second quarter as UL took a 20-14 lead into the locker room. In the third quarter, the Jets broke the game wide open by outscoring the Eagles 19-7 and taking a 39-21 lead into the final quarter. In that finale, the Jets outscored the Eagles 17-11 to get the nod at 56-32.

Stats and scoring for the Eagles:

Freshman Katie Blatt had a varsity career high 12 points; Mallory Chapman, 11 points; Kiara Standiford, four points; Dallas Mullet, three points; and Alivia Melott, two points.

The Eagles shot 8-19 from the free throw line while the Jets were 14-20. The Eagles are scoring an average of 31.67 points per game while giving up 64 points per game.
