Hornets Lose, 13-12 In OT

By Staff | Nov 2, 2011

The Hundred Hornets fell to 0-10 on the season after dropping a 13-12 overtime loss to Tygarts Valley in Hundred Oct. 28 on a wet and muddy Cosgray Field.

The Hornets’ Ray Yoho stopped Tygarts Valley at the two-yard line on a nice goal line stand in the first period.

Hundred moved the ball 60 yards and was about to put one in, when the drive stalled in Tygarts’ red-zone. Both teams moved the ball the rest of the half, but neither team could pound it into the end zone.

In the second half, Tygarts scored a touchdown and the Hornet defense stopped the PAT attempt.

In the fourth period the Hornets drove 80 yards, keyed by a pair of nice gainers by Dylan Murphy and runs by Mhar Olayan, Tyler Opyoke, Thomas Preston and a pass completion to Nick Phillips that ended with a Preston 11-yard touchdown scamper. The two point conversion attempt was denied and the game went into overtime.

But, before the OT period, the Hornets had one more chance to get on the board. Murphy picked off his second interception of the game and ran it back 25 yards and was pulled down by his face mask.

However, the referee didn’t see it that way. Instead of one more play because of a defensive penalty not called, the game ended in regulation with a 6-6 tie.

The Hornets scored first in overtime with a Preston gallop, but missed its conversion run attempt. Hundred was on the verge of gaining its first victory of the season when its defensive unit held Tygarts Valley, but a pass interference call gave the visitors a new set of downs and would score the tying TD moments later.

The field was a muddy mess and Tygarts Valley was going for the conversion kick. With the ball in the mud and the place from where the kicker had to kick, it looked like it was going to go into a second overtime. However, the Tygarts’ kicker split the uprights to win the game.

“The boys played as hard as they could and left everything they had on the field,” said Hundred Head Coach Rex Rush.

“You have to give the Tygarts kicker his due, with the muddy conditions the way they were, I didn’t think it was possible. I feel bad for my kids, they never quit and played hard.”

Murphy rushed for 43 yards; Olyan, 32 yards; Preston, 19 yards; Tyler Opyoke, 11 yards; Chris Varner, 10 yards; and Yoho and Jacob Watson each netted five yards rushing. Through the air Murphy completed passes to Phillips, Olyan, and Courtland Armstrong.

Defensively, Yoho had 16 tackles; Bryan Johnson, 10 tackles; Olayan and Tyler Koontz each had eight stops; while Watson and Opyoke each recorded seven tackles. Murphy had four tackles and picked off two Tygarts Valley passes.

Coach Rush and his staff will lose seniors Mhar Olayan, Dylan Murphy, Thomas Preston, Tyler Opyoke, Nick Phillips, Bryan Johnson, Ray Yoho, Jacob Watson, Timmy Sapp, and Jade Hains.
