Knights Outlast Hornets

By Staff | Oct 26, 2011

Hundred Hornets senior quarterback Dylan Murphy completed 14 passes for 245-yards and a score, while adding 46-yards rushing and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Toronto Red Knights came back to score a 52-36 victory over the winless Hundred Hornets Friday, Oct. 21 at Cosgray Field in Hundred.

Murphy got the Hornets on the board with a tantalizing eight-yard romp off an 80-yard eight play drive keyed by a pair of Murphy tosses to Chris Varner and Nick Phillips aerials to give the hosts a 6-0 lead.

Toronto marched down the field before being picked off by Varner at the two-yard line. The next play Toronto tackled Murphy in the end zone for a safety to get them on the board, with Hundred clinging to a 6-2 advantage in the first period.

The Hornets scored on a Varner 64-yard touchdown catch and run and Murphy scored on a four-yarder on a broken play that gave the Hornets their largest lead of the season.

However, the Red Knights scored 36 straight points to put the game out of reach.

However, Murphy later scored on a one-yarder and Thomas Preston pounded one in for a four-yard touchdown before it was all said and done. The TD drive was highlighted by a Murphy 28-yard run and a pair of Varner and Mhar Olayan pass receptions, and a Tyler Opyoke to Preston hook and latteral.

The pass blocking of Josh King, Tyler Koontz, Ray Yoho, Jade Hains and Jacob Watson gave Murphy the time he needed to complete his passes down the field.

“We didn’t give up. The boys played as hard as ever against a very good Toronto team,” said Hornet Head Coach Rex Rush. “I’m just as happy as can be about how well we turned it around after all the injuries we have had. If we can play with that same intensity against Tygarts Valley will could finish the season with a win.”

Besides the 245-yards passing, Murphy added 46-yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also had an interception and a batted down a Knight pass. Varner caught a 65-yard TD and rushed for 22 yards, while Preston hauled in two catches for 56-yards and rushed for 4-yards. Phillips and Courtland Armstrong teamed for 74-yards receiving, while Olayan and Opyoke combined for 48-yards.

Hains and Watson each recorded 11 tackles, with Watson recording two sacks and Hains one. Olayan made 10 tackles and recorded a sack, while Opyoke and Yoho each hauling down nine Knights. Opyoke also recorded a sack as well as Tim Myers. Phillips knocked down a pass, while Varner and Murphy each added an interception.

The Hornets will try to get their first win of the season against Tygart Valley this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Tygarts Valley High School.
