‘Jacks Cage Cougars, 50-28

By Staff | Oct 19, 2011

The Frontier Cougars were thrashed into the ground by the Valley Lumberjack dynamic duo of Casey Pingley and Jon Smallwood, who accumulated 343 of 410 total yards in Pine Grove Oct. 14. They also scored six touchdowns to upend the Cougars by the score of 50-28 on a muddy Tom West Field.

Pingley took the majority of the carries on the ‘Jacks’ opening 70-yard drive. He gained 50 yards of the nine-play, 70-yard drive, while moving the chains four times. He capped off the drive with a thrilling 22-yard TD run, while giving three Cougars a piggy-back ride.

Meanwhile, Frontier did most of their damage on the opening drive in the air with a pair of 21-yard passes. But a red zone defensive stand by the Lumberjacks got the ball back on downs. Valley strapped down their chin straps and went to work once again on their second possession. Pingley added three more 12-yard runs and Smallwood capped off the second scoring drive with a 30-yard run to paydirt. He then tacked on the two-point conversion run for a 14-0 lead.

With only a little over three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Frontier picked up a first down on a 12-yarder. However, a coverage sack by Pingley – with the help of Collin Bates – would help force the Cougars to punt. The Pingley-Smallwood consortium pushed the ‘Jacks into Cougar territory after the punt, before giving the ball up on downs.

One play later, Frontier tossed a quick one to the outside for an 85-yard touchdown pitch- and-catch. The Cougar quarterback ran in the two-point conversion to narrow the gap to 14-8 with eight minutes remaining until halftime.

Clay Ueltschy returned the ensuing kickoff 30 yards to give the home team good field position.

Pingley and Smallwood moved the ball down field at three to four yards at a clip before Pingley broke loose on a 30-yarder and finished off the drive with a three-yard scamper.

Frontier started its next drive at the Cougar 22 yard line. After an incomplete pass, the Cougars were penalized for holding. However, after a 10-yard pass reception, Valley was flagged for a personal foul, giving Frontier a new set of downs. After a Lumberjack coverage sack, the Frontier Cougar quarterback raced down the field, picking up big yardage. One play later, Frontier scored on a 30-yard strike, which was followed by a good two-point conversion pass, taking the score to 20-14, Valley, at the break.

Both teams didn’t score on their first series of the third period, but Pingley got the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard once again on a nifty 16-yard run on its second possession. After the ensuing kick, Frontier took a five-yard penalty for motion. On the next play, Ueltschy jumped high to pick off a Frontier pass and ran it back almost 30 yards to set up a Smallwood three-yard TD run. Ueltschy would add the two-point conversion pass from Hunter Ring to extend the Lumberjack lead to 21 points.

Smallwood added another touchdown run, with Wade adding the two-point conversion to end three periods of play.

Neither team scored the rest of the quarter, but Frontier scored two more touchdown passes, mixed in by a Wade four-yard touchdown run for all the remaining points of the game.

Pingley rushed for 234-yards and scored three touchdowns, while his business partner, Smallwood, added 109 yards and three touchdowns.

Wade added 20 yards and a touchdown, while Ring tallied 17 yards. VHS linemen Austin Bassett tacked on seven yards, while Taylor Bates and Donald Smith accumulated 24 yards rushing. Ueltschy caught the lone Valley pass reception for 31 yards.

The Lumberjack offense moved the chains 19 times, while Frontier cashed in nine times. Smallwood had nine tackles to lead the ‘Jack defense, while Ueltschy dropped eight Frontier Cougars. He also had half a sack and added an interception. Pingley decked seven Cougar ball carriers, while adding two quarterback sacks. Thomas West also had an interception for Valley.

Valley will visit Moundsville Friday night to face the ever-so-dangerous Bishop Donahue on Monarch Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
