Hundred

The Hundred Hornet Volleyball Team has won one match and lost eight so far this season. Even though it’s the first year for volleyball at Hundred, the Lady Hornets haven’t been blown out. In the eight defeats, the Hornets have won four sets, and on their first-ever match victory, Hundred won both sets.

Lady Hornet Head Coach Rebbecca Goff has never played the game and is a novice to coaching. “I have never played the game, but the girls here at Hundred wanted a volleyball team real bad. And, since my daughter was a senior, I just couldn’t say no,” said Goff.

“None of the girls ever played the game except for Cheyenne Myers, who played one year at North Marion,” added Goff. “We had 20-plus girls try out for the team, but now we have only eight players, with four of those being seniors.”

Hundred offers only softball, basketball and cheerleading for the girls and the addition of volleyball has worked out well, even though they have not won many matches.

The Lady Hornets opened the season against Clay-Battelle and lost all three sets, but weren’t blown away and even had the lead several times before falling. In its second match, the Hornets took on East Richland winning one set, in the best of five matches.

The Lady Hornets participated in the “Volley for a Cure” at Clarksburg and felt defeat against Notre Dame, Lincoln and Mapletown.

Hundred also lost three straight to West Green, but won a set against the Lady Cee-Bees before beating Cameron in two straight sets to win.

Hundred lost 3-4 to Bishop Donahue before dropping a three-set match to East Richland Christian Sept. 27 inside the Hornets Nest. However, all three matches were close, losing by a total of 14 points, with the last one by only two points.

The Lady Hornets’ season is at the halfway point, with 10 matches left, excluding the Mason-Dixon and OVAC tournaments, and, of course, the post-season sectional.

If you haven’t had the chance to catch these girls yet this season you have only five home games left: Oct. 3, 13, 17, 20 and Oct. 26.

River

The River Pilots made quick work of the Linsly School in volleyball action at Richard Potts Gymnasium Sept. 28 by the scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-19.

Six Lady Pilots pounded out 35 kills, led by Leslie Young with 11 and Torey Potts with 10. Brittany Connors added six kills, while Annie Turnie, Dakota Earley and Courtney Prout made up the rest of those nasty kills.

Turner had a game-high 29 assists and provided six digs, while Hannah Jones paced the red-hot Lady Pilots with 23 digs. Four Pilots combined for 19 service aces, paced by Potts with seven and Earley with five. Connors and Turner added four and three service aces, respectively.

Potts and Young were strong at the net, each blocking a pair of Lady Cadet shots. In addition, Stephanie Murdock added nine digs and Maggie Morrow contributed three digs for the home team.
