Hornets Beat ‘Jacks, Dragons, And West Greene

By Staff | Jan 28, 2009

Corey Kimble and Emery Smith

The home-standing Hundred Hornets out-scored their county rival Valley Lumberjacks in every period, Jan. 23 to claim a 66-53 victory.

Although the Hornets outscored the ‘Jacks in every period, they were only up six points heading into the fourth period. Hornet Head Coach Justin Balwantz wasn’t worried one bit, as his cagers have come back in the fourth period to put away teams all season.

Hornet point guard Logan McDiffitt juked and jived and sliced his way between ‘Jack defenders throughout the game and came up big in the fourth to help Hundred escape with a victory over a gallant Lumberjack squad.

McDiffitt led the Hornets with 20 points, including 6-7 from the charity stripe. Emery Smith added 16 points, including a basket from beyond the arc. He and teammate Corey Kimble hauled in 30 boards between them, while Kimble tallied 14 markers. Teammate Zach Phillips played tough, scoring nine points and using his inside game to keep Valley’s defense from double teaming Smith and Kimble. Dalton Kuhn netted a three-point basket, while Tyrell Watson and Brady Koontz each tallied two points for the home team.

Ronald Morris paced the Lumberjacks with 23 points, including a trio of baskets from well-beyond the arc. Alex Henderson chipped in with nine markers, including a pair of long range bombs, while Dustin Bickerstaff tallied five, including a triple. Coleman Ueltschy, Matt Poling, Garrett Ueltschy, and Clay Ueltschy knocked in four points each.

One highlight was when Clay Ueltschy grabbed a rebound, hit Garrett Ueltschy, who dished off to Coleman Ueltschy for the assist.

Valley will host Bishop Donahue Jan. 27 and Cameron Jan. 30, while Hundred will host Jefferson-Morgan and Notre Dame tonight and Jan. 30. Each game is set to get underway with the junior varsity tilt starting at 6 p.m.

After beating the Lumberjacks of Valley High School Jan. 23, the Hundred Hornets took on second-ranked OVAC Class-A Cameron Dragons on Jan. 24.

Usually, after a hard-fought game the night before, teams sometimes have let-downs. However, it didn’t happen in this one, as the Hornets sprinted out to a 36-18 lead and never looked back in slaying the Dragons, 58-41.

Hundred’s Logan McDiffitt and Dalton Kuhn combined for 38 points, including five three point baskets to lead the Hornets, while Emery Smith tacked on another 14. Zach Phillips tallied four markers, while the Dragons limited the Hornets’ Corey Kimble to 2-2 from the charity line.

The Hornets will host Jefferson-Morgan and Notre Dame Jan. 28 and Jan. 30, respectively, with the tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. on both nights.

Every once in a while during a high school basketball game, nothing goes right. And, every now and then, everything right happens, as the Hundred Hornets found out Jan. 21 in a contest with West Greene.

Nine different Hornets scored baskets – three of them in double digits. Eight baskets from beyond the arc and 50 percent of the free throws went in for the Good Guys, while nothing was going in for West Greene, who succumbed 75-19 to the Hornets.

Hundred ripped the cords for 31 points in the first period, while West Greene only netted six points. The second period was almost a carbon copy of the first, except that Hundred didn’t score as many points, while the visitors again netted six points.

With baskets for each side falling as they were, the contest was pretty much over. The Hornet bench out-scored the visitors 24-7 in the second half. Corey Kimble and Logan McDiffitt each scored 17 points for the home team, while Dalton Kuhn and Emery Smith tallied 12 and eight points, respectively.

Kimble and McDiffitt teamed for five three point baskets, 11 rebounds, seven steals, six assists, and made 5-7 from the charity stripe in two periods of play. Dalton Kuhn made two baskets from well beyond the arc, while Smith hauled in four boards, stole three West Greene passes, and had a pair of assists in two quarters.

Zach Phillips and Tyrell Watson each netted five points, while Mitch Moore and Brady Koontz tallied four markers each. Shane Kuhn finished off the Hornet scoring with three markers.

In the junior varsity contest, Koontz and Shane Kuhn teamed for 23 of the 38 Hornet points to help their team defeat West Greene’s JV 38-28. Moore chipped in eight points for Hundred, with Watson, Chris Shackleford, and Turner Bragg topping off the scoring.

The Hundred varsity team moved to 4-3 on the season, while the jayvee team evened their record at 3-3.
