Committee Hopes To Raise Funds For PG Park

November 13, 2013
Wetzel Chronicle

The Pine Grove Park Committee is stepping up to ensure the city's children will always have a place to play; thus, they are currently seeking help for some much-needed improvements to Bill Earley Park. The public will have a chance to help Nov. 17, when the committee is hosting a spaghetti dinner.

Just phase one of the park project will cost the committee $45,000; however, this amount will allow the park committee to purchase an impressive jungle gym-type apparatus, which will include stairs and slides. This amount will also pay for landscaping around the apparatus, including protective rubber mulch.

Town council member Randy Street, park committee chairman, stressed that the renovations are all for the "kids and the community." "There's really nothing in the community for the kids right now," he stated. "The first stage (in the renovations) is getting the playground equipment in for the kids," he added.

Pine Grove’s Park Committee aspires to eventually resurface and revitalize the basketball court.

Street said much of the equipment that was at the playground-as it has now been torn down due to its unsafe state-was approximately 40 years old. Swing chairs had been repaired with duct-tape and other pieces of equipment had loose rusty nuts and bolts.

"Hard work is nothing new to us," stated Kristi Earley, park committee member, emphasizing that the committee is willing to work hard to obtain the necessary, safer improvements for the park, for the town's children.

The park committee is looking into grants, but in the meantime, a spaghetti dinner is being planned for Nov. 17, 11-2 p.m., at the Byrd Center. The cost will be a donation per plate and all proceeds will benefit the park.

The park is also fervently seeking bids to replace the park's shelter. The job has been put out for bid for a considerable amount of time now, yet no contractors have responded.
