By Staff | Apr 24, 2013

Hundred closed the gap to 11-10 heading into the final stanza, but the Valley ‘Jills responded with a four-run seventh to claim a 15-10 victory April 16 at Cosgray Field in Hundred.

Valley opened the game with a ground out to first before the Lady Hornets committed three errors – two of them back-to-back – coupled with a two-RBI single by Jessica Ashcraft to give the visitors a 3-0 lead right from the get-go.

However, Hundred’s Paige Shriver led off with a bunt, then stole second right before Emily Ebert hit a bloop single to get on. After a double steal, Andrea Nagy lofted a standup double that scored both Shriver and Ebert to knot the game at three.

The Lumberjills’ Sarah Bassett opened the second with a triple, but Ebert would punch-out the next two Valley batters. Hundred got out of the inning when Bre Harris lined one down the third base line, hitting Bassett and putting her out.

After a Hundred walk and a fielder’s choice in the bottom half, Valley’s catcher, Angela Sharpe, threw out a Hundred baserunner trying to steal second. Harris struck out the next Hornet batter with a heater to end frame two.

The ‘Jills’ Alyssa Sharpe open the third with a lead-off double and moved to third on a seeing-eye single by Megan Bucher. Jessica Ashcraft singled, scoring Sharpe and Bucher, who stole second on the previous pitch. After a ground out, Arizona Cunningham singled to plate Ashcraft and the ‘Jills tacked on three more runs before Ebert struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Whatever the ‘Jills could do, the Lady Hornets proposed to do it better. Shriver had her second straight bunt single and stole second. After a strike out, Erika Hunter drilled a single that scored Shriver, who was running on the pitch.

Hundred would tally one more run when Nagy tattooed a Harris fastball for her second straight RBI base hit. However, the ‘Jills got out of the inning without any further damage with Valley up 5-4 after three complete innings.

After a pair of walks, a strikeout, and an error that scored a run, Ashcraft cleared the bases with a three-run home run that gave the visitors a 9-4 lead. After another walk and a stolen base, Cunningham blooped in yet another Valley run to give the visitors a 10-4 advantage.

Hundred would go down quietly in order in the home half. After two straight walks, Shriver would make a nice grab at short to rob Bucher of extra bases and save two runs. Ashcraft would pick up her fifth RBI of the night on a ground out that pushed Valley’s lead to 11-4.

Hundred opened the home half with Shriver’s third hit of the game. She then stole second and third and scored on a Nikki Cunningham single. During the frame, Sarah Bassett made a nice grab to rob Ebert of a hit. Cunningham scored on a Taylor Ashcraft single to narrow the gap to 11-6.

After an Arizona Cunningham walk, Ebert would strikeout the next three batters to retire the side. In the home half, Hundred opened with a ground out. But, after a pair of walks, a pair of stolen bases, and an Ebert single that scored two runs. Ebert stole two bases and came home on a single from Cunningham, who came home on a Nagy triple.

Bucher came in relief for the ‘Jills, but she would load the bases before enticing the next batter to pop out to end the sixth with Hundred down only one run heading into the seventh.

Harris doubled to open the seventh, but was gunned down by the left fielder when she tried to turn it into a triple. Alyssa Sharpe followed with a double and Bucher would get to first after being hit by a pitch.

Jessica Ashcraft doubled in two more Valley runs, followed by a hit batsman and a walk to load the bases once more. Meranda Roe drove in the last Lumberjill run with a single.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Shriver, Mady Wheeler, and Erika Hunter each walked to load the bases. But, the game ended with two fielder’s choice plays and an infield fly.

The ‘Jills’ Jessica Ashcraft was 4-5, with seven RBIs and a three-run home run, while Alyssa Sharpe tacked on three hits to pace the Lumberjills. Bucher, Harris, Megan Martin, and Arizona Cunningham each recorded two hits, while Bassett and Roe each recorded a hit.

Harris picked up the win, striking out four, while Ebert took the loss with seven Ks.

At the plate, Nagy pounded out four hits, while Shriver added three hits and Ebert and Nikki Cunningham each had two. Hunter, Wheeler, and Taylor Ashcraft each had a hit, while Tameka Kernen reached base on an error and played outstanding defense in right field for Hundred.
