CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia officials are set to celebrate the new bridge connecting Nitro and St. Albans.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and others are scheduled to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday for the new Dick Henderson Bridge Memorial Bridge.

The celebration will take place in the middle of the new bridge.

The West Virginia Division of Highways says the bridge will be open to pedestrian traffic on Thursday night for a community celebration.

The bridge is replaces a 79-year-old span that was demolished earlier this year.

Officials say reinforcing and strengthening the existing piers allowed the contractor to maintain traffic on the nearly $24 million bridge while work was being done below. It was closed for less than 10 months.
