CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — State Sen. Robert Plymale has been honored for his work promoting the education of young children.

The state Department of Education says the Wayne County Democrat has received the 2013 West Virginia Champion of Universal Pre-K Award.

Plymale has served as the chairman of the Senate Education Committee since 2002. He's been a leading supporter of the Universal Pre-K program in West Virginia.

State law required universal preschool to be available to all of the state's 4-year-olds by the 2012-13 school year. Nearly 16,000 children attended pre-K programs across the state last year.
