To The Editor,

Good morning. My son Matthew and I discussed writing a letter to the editor. It will not change the public opinion or perception of what was written.

But, we wanted to correct some of the obvious errors inadvertently reported. Leroy was originally from Fredericktown, Missouri, not Texas. He moved to Fairview, West Virginia in 2008 to stay with a friend who he had served in the Navy with. During his time in West Virginia, he attended Fairmont University and graduated with a degree in chemistry. His son Matthew had not seen his dad since May 8, 2008.

We cared about Leroy deeply, and are saddened that he passed away without anyone with him. His son Matthew, who is 18-years-old, along with the help of other organizations, made the decision to have his dad receive a military burial. We were not aware at the time of his death that his remains could have been sent back to his hometown of Fredericktown, Missouri, for burial. Also, that his son could have contacted the VA and applied for Death Benefits.

But, it doesn’t matter at this point because Leroy loved the mountains, and would have wanted his final resting place to be near them.

We want to thank the community of Jacksonburg, all the local veterans organizations, Wetzel County Sheriff’s Department, medical examiner, and especially to Alice and her friends for taking care of Matthew’s dad. We appreciate your kindness, generosity, and big hearts.

God Bless all of you.

Thank you,

Robin McElrath
