To the Editor,

Some food for thought: Does something smell on the road bond issue?

I have given some hard thought to the road bond issue, and I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing in it for the northern panhandle. Route 2 is not going to be completed from Parkersburg to Chester, and the I-68 extension isn’t even mentioned, which could bring more jobs to the northern panhandle. Let’s face it, the road bond issue does nothing for the northern panhandle as far as no new taxes. They already put the tax issue in place before the bond issue was voted on, with — for one – the new tax on a gallon of gasoline.

I am sure the readers, or most of them, have heard the old adage about putting the cart before the horse. It looks to me like it worked on this bond issue. All our legislators had to do is raise the taxes before the bond issue came up, then tell the public there will be no new taxes.

Let’s put it this way: They played the voters in Wetzel County like a fine violin, and most of them danced to the tune. Although some did say they would sit this one out. As for the non-voters, they had to be for the bond issue, since they didn’t vote against it.

Well, this old malcontent will sign off for now and look for something else to gripe about.
