The 2013 winter issue of Goldenseal magazine includes an article about two sisters whose families were long-time residents of New Martinsville. Isolene Gump Michael and Delma Gump Garrison moved with their families to New Martinsville in 1953, at which time their husbands opened GMG Plumbing and Heating.

GMG, which was located on Monroe Avenue, was named for three brothers-in-law, Hugh Garrison, Edward Michael, and Brooks Gump. The well-known company operated for over 25 years.

Delma Garrison (99 years old) currently resides at New Martinsville Health Care Center, while Isolene Michael (97 years old) lives at Heritage Point Retirement Village in Morgantown. Their children, Daryl and Roger (Chester) Michael and Janice Lou and Mary Sue Garrison, graduated from Magnolia High School during 1955-1961.

The Goldenseal article, “Friendship Quilts”, describes two unique quilts made by the sisters’ mother in 1931.

These quilts each consist of 30 squares, which were individually designed and sewn by a relative or a friend. The squares, featuring brightly colored objects such as flowers, fruits, butterflies, hearts, bows, or bells, contained the name or initials of the woman who created it.

Delma and Isolene, the oldest daughters of Essie Myres Gump, were each given one of the friendship quilts after they were married. Each quilt is currently in excellent condition and is used as a bed cover.
