To the Editor:
This letter is in response to Diane Strippel’s letter to the editor which appeared in the Wetzel Chronicle on March 2nd. In this letter Ms. Strippel provides information about a Republican effort to defund Planned Parenthood. What she fails to point out is this proposed legislation by the GOP will not only defund Planned Parenthood, but will defund the entire Title X program in our country. Title X was introduced by President Nixon and is the country’s family planning program, which provides women with access to birth control, cancer screenings, HIV testing, and Planned Parenthood health centers. PP is a not-for-profit organization that provides sex education and reproductive health care for men, women, and adolescents throughout the world. It also offers services such as breast and cervical cancer screening.
The passing of this legislation to defund the entire Title X program would be detrimental to lower income citizens who cannot afford to see an OB/GYN or primary physician.
The number of teen pregnancies, even in our area especially at the high school level, has been increasing for a number of years now. To defund federal programs which assist in the prevention of unintended pregnancies is one of the most irresponsible acts of legislation that the GOP could pass.
Statistics show that Title X helps prevent approximately one million unintended pregnancies (over half of which would end in abortion) every single year. It would seem to me if Republicans and pro-life Americans want to see the number of abortions decrease, they should probably start by allowing funding to prevent unintended pregnancies in the first place through the use of contraception and birth control provided by Title X.
Something to consider when you step into the polls in 2012.
