Bruce Pool A Community Landmark
Demolition began on the glorious old structure this past week and continues. Bruce Pool was built in 1941 by New Martinsville Parks and the Works Project Administration. Time had taken a toll on the structure and it was decided 14 years ago not to reopen the pool due to state and federal laws which promote mandatory requirements for suction entrapment avoidance.
At the time of its closing in 2010 the estimated cost to make the pool compliant with federal law was approximately $250,000. However over time the structure has seen further deterioration and would have required a complete rebuild.
Plans are in the works for a new facility that will replace the aging swimming hole with a splash pad for summer use and a place for ice skating in the winter. City officials and the parks and recreation department are hoping to bring the area back to life, while providing a safe community intended area for young and old to enjoy. For memories sake the front entrance to the new modern design is to be salvaged to pay homage to Bruce Pool and maintain some of the nostalgia of the old pool structure.
The goal of the city is to offer a new and inviting look to Bruce Park that would offer fun and relief from the heat on warm summer days. The project allows for the possibility of new memories to be made while preserving the history of the Bruce Pool.
The 83 year old pool fell into disrepair with crumbling concrete, drainage problems, and other deterioration which compromised its integrity. It was not compliant with the American Disabilities Act and the end result was demolition and saving as much of the past as possible. The local museum was able to salvage several different pieces from the old pool including two lifeguard stands, two diving boards, some light pole fixtures and globes and a few other items.
Bruce Park is a beautiful part of New Martinsville and most residents can identify with it in one way or another. Thinking back in time we can remember the ball courts which still stand, the pool parties, swim dances, fastpitch softball games and tournaments, and little league baseball. The shelters have provided space for many community and family gatherings as well as fourth of July celebrations and a starting point for many community parades. It is a staple of the community that still serves its intended purpose.
Our hope is the newest addition will live up to its billing and bring many more years of fun and excitement to local residents and visitors to Bruce Park. It’s always sad to see changes to our landscape, however it brings us joy to see a new era beginning with a peek of the past still visible. Here’s to many more years of memories at Bruce Park.
