Debate is debated
If you read the letters to the editor on this page, it is obvious the upcoming debate detailed in the article at right is a subject of much, well, debate. The organizers of the event, including the West Virginia Press Association of which we are a member, decided only the two primary candidates for the U.S. Senate seat would be included.
They cite the AARP’s criteria of five percent support (see the article for particulars) to be included in the debate. While we understand the argument that all should be at the table, we also understand exclusion in the interest of time. If five candidates participated, conceivably half or fewer questions/issues could be addressed. Honest exploration of the issues is already difficult to obtain. The organizers want to get the most mileage for this almost unprecedented event.
