It is certainly unfortunate that the Main Street bridge in New Martinsville must be closed while some repairs are made to its piers. But we think everyone can agree that it is necessary.

While the work is in the name of safety, its closure causes other safety concerns. We are glad to hear that all involved recognize those issues and are talking about the needed provisions before a possible emergency arises. CSX has agreed to work with officials to keep access open and gates will allow emergency vehicles to cross as needed.
