Getting Messier

By Staff | Oct 10, 2012

Two weeks ago when the Wetzel County Commission was speaking of the large unpaid bills in the sheriff’s department, the situation was difficult. But the commission was seeking advice and it looked like there could be some possible alternatives.

Then the sheriff, James Hoskins, resigned. Well, once the commission appointed a new sheriff, Mike Koontz, there was some relief to the paperwork in sight. Koontz has indeed been working on paying the bills, some dating back about a year.

Now Chief Deputy Rob Haught is gone, a parting they say was amicable, and Democratic nominee for sheriff and retired deputy John Brookover is now filling the second-in-command slot.

An audit of the department appears to be on the horizon. Who knows what that will find.

It is often said that things must get messed up before they can get cleaned up. We hope the latter is coming soon; the current situation is certainly messy.
