Shop Locally

By Staff | Dec 7, 2011

We know it’s been said, many times, many ways. . . . shop locally.

That might not be how the song really goes and it might be old news, but it is still relevant and necessary-especially during this gift giving season.

The statistics may vary a bit from source to source, but it is certainly true that more of the money spent at a local business goes into the local economy.

The 3/50 Project, a movement to encourage shopping locally, says that $68 of every $100 spent at a locally owned independent store returns to the community, compared to $43 from a national chain.

The project also gives the statistic that if half the working population spent $50 each month in a locally owned business, more than $42.6 billion in revenue would be generated.

You may not be able to afford that $50 each month, but during this time of the year we bet you could.

Most people spend a bit more freely now as they are buying gifts for others. They most likely have money budgeted for gifts that can be purchased anywhere. Why not here?

We have many locally owned businesses and they offer a wide variety of items. Surely at least a few of the people on your list could be pleasantly surprised by something from a small retailer in your neighborhood. May you make their days merry and bright while doing the same for your neighborhood entrepreneur. Shop locally.
