Shirley Kate Underwood Hinerman
Shirley Kate Underwood Hinerman, 88, formerly of Mobley, WV, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Huntersville, North Carolina, surrounded by family.
Shirley was born on May 5, 1937, in Margaret, Marion County, WV. She was the daughter of the late Max V. Underwood and Amy Ruth Robinson Underwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Gean Fluharty, sister-in-law, Jean Allen, and brother-in-law, John Hinerman.
On July 13, 1957, she married her life partner, Roger “Dick” Hinerman, in St. Albans, WV. Together they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and deep devotion to their family. Shirley was a life-long member of the Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband Dick Hinerman, her son, Richard (Sandy) Hinerman of New Martinsville; and her daughter, Annette (Gary) Farley of Huntersville, NC. She is also survived by her siblings: Jenny Moore of Clarksburg, Dick (Mary) Underwood of Mobley, and Tom (Helen) Underwood of Jacksonburg.
Shirley was a proud and loving grandmother to Alicia (Caleb) Seckman of Charleston, WV; Sara (Wade) Lamb of Kannapolis, NC; Alec Hinerman of Houston, TX; and Olivia (Chris) Grunert of Asheville, NC. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren Ava, Violet, Sylvia, and Theodore, who brought her endless joy.
Shirley’s heart was her home. She dedicated her life to nurturing, supporting, and loving those around her. A celebrated baker and creative spirit, Shirley expressed her love through her hands. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and connection, filled with the comforts of homemade bread, cookies, and family-favorite recipes. She also blessed many with her sewing and quilting, taking great care and pride in creating pieces that made even ordinary moments feel special.
Shirley lived in Mobley for 55 years, where she was a beloved presence in the community. She served as a member of the Mobley Homemakers, Shortline Alumni Association, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Augusta Chapter #6 in Mannington. Alongside her husband, she owned and operated Hinerman’s Grocery in Mobley. She also co-owned and operated The Clothesline, a clothing store in Mannington, with her sister-in-law, Eva Lou Hinerman.
In later years, Shirley and Dick enjoyed spending winters in Arcadia, FL where they cherished time with their “lunch bunch,” relaxing by the pool, playing shuffleboard and cards, and forming friendships that added joy and laughter to their days.
Shirley will be remembered for her sharp wit, loving heart, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. Her spirit lives on in every family gathering, holiday, and shared recipe. She is deeply loved and will be forever missed.
A visitation will take place at Palmer Funeral Home in Pine Grove at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 24. Shirley will be laid to rest at Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Hasting, WV.
