What a difference a year makes! With Hundred High School closing down due to consolidation within the county, the thought was, what will happen to the High School Building. That’s when Long Drain school principal Jeremy Kelch came up with a plan and presented it to the Wetzel County Board of Education.

Thinking ahead, the plan called for the closing of Long Drain and moving the students into the former High School, to keep a school in the community and prevent disrepair to the building. The board approved the request and soon after the name was changed to Hundred Heritage School, and with that the HHS remained.

On Monday, August 18, it became official as community members, students and teachers gathered at the school for the ribbon cutting and grand opening. A full house showed up for the event with county officials, city officials and BOE members in attendance.

Following the ribbon cutting by long-time Hundred educator and coach Virgil Wilkins, tours of the facility were offered by staff members, and light food and refreshments were served.

While the changes are not totally complete, as playground equipment and a few touchups remain, the changes to classrooms along with fresh paint and other transformations have made a remarkable place for elementary and middle school students to attend.

The HHS will carry on the mascot tradition of “Hornets” and hopefully give Hundred residents a school to be proud of for years to come.

Many of the young kids seem excited to be at the new school and are looking forward to a new and great experience as they enter the first year at Hundred Heritage.
