Wetzel County BOE Donate to Libraries

The Wetzel County Board of Education met in a regular session on Monday September 13, 2021, at the County Board Office to discuss the agenda items. Board member Brian Castilow led in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the invocation given by member Linda Fonner. Board President Brian Price called the meeting to order with all the board members present.

First item covered was a donation to all County Public Libraries in Wetzel County, Hundred, New Martinsville, Paden City, and Pine Grove were awarded.

Paul Huston gave an update on GSA/SAT in the county. Wetzel County students are in the bottom half of all counties grade percentages but, Huston said they are working on ways for improvement.

Eric Emch delivered a T.I.S. update by giving a video presentation on how to use the Pivot Table in the classrooms to make it easier and more accessible for teachers to collect data needed for each grade.

Superintendent Tammy Wells said that starting September 20th, the schools will be providing covid numbers daily.

The Board unanimously approved the minutes for the regular meeting of August 23, 2021, and the special meeting held September 8, 2021.

Superintendents request to approve routine matters was given unanimous approval by the board as follows. Routine Matters: Approval of request to attend Wetzel County Schools for the 2021-2022 school year, as submitted. Approval of request from Carol Haught, Clerk of the Wetzel County Commission, to use the following facilities for the 2021 EMS/FIRE Levy Election on October 22, 2021, Hundred High School, Short Line School, Valley High School, Board of Education Office, Paden City Elementary, New Martinsville School, and WCTEC.

Out of State Trips: Approval of request from Fay Pritchard, Principal, for the Second Grade Teachers at New Martinsville School to take the second-grade students on an educational field trip to Bellaire, OH to the Lego Plastic Museum on Thursday, September 30, 2021. Approval of request from Arianne Schupbach, English Teacher, to take Valley High School students on an international education trip for a tour of Switzerland, Italy, France, and Spain for the summer of 2023. (Funded through student fees). Fund Raisers:

In compliance with the requirements of West Virginia State Board of Education Policy 1224.1, the Superintendent recommends that the Board approve the following groups/organizations to raise funds (monies) in the name of a particular school in Wetzel County: Hundred High School: Hundred High School Band Boosters, Inc. Paden City High School: The Paden City Schools Athletic Association: Short Line School: Short Line Elementary PTO Shortline Athletic Boosters.

Affiliation Agreement: Approval of agreement between Wheeling University and Wetzel County Schools for the purpose of student teachers to complete various clinical field experiences, effective the 2021-2022 school year.

The Treasurer’s report was given unanimous approval by the board for Payment of Bills for the Month of August 2021, (invoices approved at this meeting are available for review at the Wetzel County Schools’ Financial Office). Approval for Transfers and Increases in the Budget, and approval for the Annual Financial Statements for Fiscal Year 2021. Treasurer Jeff Lancaster reported a 6.9-million-dollar carryover from the previous fiscal year. Lancaster also said the payroll for Wetzel County was 25 million last year.

Advanced Placement into Kindergarten by originator Teresa Standiford of First Reading of the Deleted Policy, JECAA. (In packets…also located for public review at www.wetzelcountyschools.com), was approved by unanimous vote by the board.

Resolution for Enhancing Collaboration with Military Organizations and Providing Supports to Military Families from being deployed was proposed by Assistant Superintendent Darren Cook was given approval by the board and their full support.

Superintendent Wells asked the board to post/hire two new secretary positions, one at WCTEC and the other as a financial secretary. The board will revisit the request at the next meeting.

Local Policy Providing Paid COVID-19 leave was revised by a new covid policy beginning August 23, 2021, to December 31, 2021, for up to 10 days of Covid leave. The board passed the motion by 4-1 vote with member Jay Yeager opposed.
