Couple to Receive First 80 and Over Vaccines

By Chuck Clegg - | Jan 6, 2021

John and Barbara Hopkins, former Mayor and first lady of Paden City, were the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccination at the Health Department in Paden City.

For nearly a year the Coronavius has been part of all our lives. But, with the new year, science and medicine has given us a way to begin the recovery. On Monday morning, at 10:00am the Wetzel/Tyler Health Department began inoculating Tyler and Wetzel County citizens.

The first to receive the vaccine was a couple from Paden City, John “Hoppy” Hopkins and his wife Barbara. They arrived in the waiting area behind the Heath Department at 5am. Behind them was a long line of people over 80 who were patiently waiting for their turn.

Unfortunately the health department was only allocated 100 doses of the vaccine. When medical personnel began vaccinating those in line, it is estimated that the supply would not be enough to meet the needs of those who were waiting.

Tom Cooper, Tyler County EMS director was asked when the next doses would be available. Mr. Copper indicated at this time, he was unsure when and how many more doses would be supplied to the counties. Tyler and Wetzel County have an estimated 25,000 residents. Governor Jim Justice said in a recent briefing more will be on there way as soon as the state receives them.
