New Martinsville Rotary Club Announces December Students of the Month

Katie Kocher and Jacob Thorpe Seniors at Magnolia High School have been named Rotary Students of the month for December 2020.

Katie lives in New Martinsville with her parents Benjamin and Rebecca Kocher. Her school activities include being a member of Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, the Principals list, the top 10 percent of her class and earning an academic letter. She does peer tutoring and participates in theater.

Her community activities include walking dogs at the animal shelter. Her hobbies and leisure time favorites are spending time with friends and taking care of her six dogs.

Upon graduation she plans to attend West Virginia University and study Political Science. She has received the Moose International Scholarship and is eligible for the Promise Scholarship. She has been employed full time at McDonald’s since August, 8, 2020.

Jacob lives in Paden City with his parents Connie Johnston and Tim Hammel.

His school activities include being a member of the MuAlpha Theta, National Honor Society, and National Home Science Society. He is also a two year head coach of the New Martinsville Park and Recreation Sunday Soccer Youth League.

Jacob played Varsity soccer during the 9-12 seasons and was captain of the team all four years. He was defensive captain his junior and senior seasons. He was named to the OVAC team his senior year..

His community activities include Head Coach of Sunday Youth soccer. His hobbies and leisure time activities include Hiking, traveling, reading, researching, and hanging out with friends.

Upon graduating from high school he plans to attend the University of Michigan and major in Aero Space Engineering.

He is eligible for the promise scholarship. .
