BOE Meets For Regular Meeting
The Wetzel County Board of Education met June 22, at the County Board Office for the regular meeting. The public was able to watch via YouTube due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Board President Warren Grace led in the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation was delivered by Board member Brian Price.
Superintendent Ed Toman recommended several items for approval with the Board approving all recommendations.
Brian L. Castilow, was approved for retirement from his position as Social Studies Teacher, and resignation from his position as Athletic Director, at Magnolia High School, effective June 30, 2020.
Other resignations approved were Belinda Baker, as SAT Co-Coordinator at Paden City High School, effective August 1, 2020. Jacqueline Clegg as Assistant Cheer Coach at Magnolia High School, effective immediately. Linda M. Fonner, as countywide substitute teacher, effective June 10, 2020. William T. McDiffitt, as Assistant Softball Coach at Magnolia High School, effective immediately. Marie T. Norris, as countywide summer bus operator (food program), effective June 16, 2020.
Lily M. Morris was approved for employment as 6-8 Language Arts Teacher at Long Drain School, effective August 24, 2020.
Jessica N. Pittman was approved for a change in assignment from the RIF/Preferred Recall list to Supervisory Teacher Aide/Braille Specialist at Short Line School, effective August 24, 2020.
Pamela A. Chapman was approved for employment as Summer Tutor at Magnolia High School and Paden City High School, effective July 1, 2020. Aaron D. Cisar for employment as Assistant Football Coach at Magnolia High School, effective the beginning of the 2020-2021 WVSSAC season. Richard E. Connor for employment as Assistant Football Coach at Magnolia High School, effective the beginning of the 2020-2021 WVSSAC season. Jeffery E. Derby for employment as Summer Tutor at Valley High School, effective July 1, 2020. Robert A. Gomez for employment as Summer Tutor at Magnolia High School and Paden City High School, effective July 1, 2020. Rodney S. Huffman for employment as Assistant Football Coach at Hundred High School, effective the beginning of the 2020-2021 WVSSAC season. Jeremy Huggins for employment as summer food distribution bus operator, effective June 23, 2020. Jeremy B. Kelch for employment as Summer Tutor at Hundred High School, effective July 1, 2020. Djuana G. Kennedy for employment as extended school year bus operator, Riverfront area, effective July 6, 2020. Timothy E. McKeever for employment as Assistant Football Coach at Magnolia High School, effective the beginning of the 2020-2021 WVSSAC season. Marie T. Norris for employment as extended school year bus operator, Long Drain area, effective July 6, 2020.
Approval was given to remove Lauren E. Chandler from the Reduction-in-Force list.
A leave of Absence request from Angela Beardmore for an extension of her family medical leave of absence from her position as Pre-K Special Needs Teacher at New Martinsville School, which began January3, 2020 through the end of the2019-2020 school year, to extend through January 1,2021, was approved.
The following were approved as for employment as countywide summer college workers. Abigail Means, Piper Gaines, Eric Weber, Haleigh King, Sebastian Stickler, Sawyer Shepard, Matt Gaiser, Cody Soles, Eli Nice, Patrick Mirandy, Zoey Jenkins, Trey Blain, Summer Timbs, Kyndra Pilant, Caleb Schilling, Damon Witschey, Ashlyn Piekarski, Bradley Baker, Raegan Hale, Jacob Anderson, Zachary Hostutler, Garylin Fletcher, and Stanley Moore.
The Board approved requests to attend Wetzel County Schools for the 2020-2021 school year, as submitted, and requests to be released from Wetzel County Schools for the 2020-2021 school year, as submitted. In compliance with the requirements of West Virginia State Board of Education Policy, Superintendent Toman recommended the Board approve the following groups and organizations to raise funds (monies) in the name of particular schools in Wetzel County. Approval was given for the Magnolia Round-baller Boosters Contract Agreement.
Approval was given for the annual renewal contract and agreement between the Wetzel-Tyler Health Department and the Wetzel County Board of Education for services provided by the Wetzel-Tyler Health Department for $4,000.00.
The annual lease agreement with New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Commission for the use of the softball and soccer fields on Hydro Drive and the Bruce Park Tennis Courts for use by the Magnolia High School Softball, Soccer, and Tennis teams during their respective seasons for $6,000.00 was approved by the board.
Approval were given for Transfers and Increases in the Budget, and to designate any remaining balances for fiscal year 2020 and report on the 2019-2020 financial statements after June 30, 2020.
In the board discussions, the class sizes were further discussed from the previous meeting. Board member Price had questioned about reducing the number of students in the classes. Mr. Price said class sizes were to big for the proper instruction of each student. Superintendent Ed Toman said after many discussions they would remain the way they are for this year because of the unknown from the Covid-19 pandemic and look at the situation next year.
They also discussed re-entry for the school year, and it is still unknown with the pandemic. They said they should know more in July.
Electrical Instructor, Mark Batton updated the maintenance and constructions projects that are in progress as of June 22, 2020.
The Valley High School Fieldhouse is continuing and they are currently installing plumbing under the floor, and will then start laying block for the building.
The Shortline School Sanitization Plant tanks are being put in place and almost completed.
Hundred High School Fieldhouse building is almost complete, the electrical and plumbing is completed and it should be ready soon.
The Paden City HS Parking Lot is about to begin any day now and the Beautification Project at the school is complete.
The Long Drain School landscaping project is mapped out and waiting on utility clearance.
Paden City Elementary School playground excavation work is complete, and playground equipment is currently being installed.
The parking lot at Magnolia High School has been sealed and re-lined and they are installing interior wing doors at the school.
