Rise Against Hunger Virtual 5K/10K Press Release

By Staff | Apr 22, 2020

New Martinsville Rotary Members help package food during 2019.

While COVID-19 has disrupted all of our everyday lives and left us wondering what will happen next, 820 million people are still facing hunger worldwide. Moundsville, New Martinsville, and Wheeling Rotary Clubs are partnering once again to help combat world hunger with the Rise Against Hunger Virtual 5K/10K and are inviting the community and other Rotary clubs to join them. The virtual race will be held May 15-17th.

Rise Against Hunger, an organization focused on providing nutritious meal packages to those in countries with high food security risks, normally hosts meal-packing events throughout the year. Last year, Moundsville, New Martinsville, and Wheeling Rotary Clubs packaged over 20,000 meals in one event. Because of COVID-19, many of these food-packing events have been cancelled or postponed and children and families worldwide are counting on these meal packages more than ever.

Children in the countries Rise Against Hunger serves typically walk an average of three miles to school every day to receive an education and meals, so in honor of these children, the Virtual 5K/10K was created.

To join the Moundsville, New Martinsville, and Wheeling Rotary Clubs in this virtual race, simply go to act.riseagainsthunger.org/team/293409 and join the team. Registration is $40 and includes a t-shirt participants can wear during race weekend. Participants can walk, run, walk and run, go inside, go outside, or however they wish to participate while being safe and continuing to practice social distancing. To complete the virtual race, run or walk the 5K or 10K at any point between 8:00am on Friday, May 15th and 8:00pm on Sunday, May 17th. Participants can also post their race times on the Rise Against Hunger Club on the Strava app. Funds raised will go directly to Rise Against Hunger to help send meals to those suffering from hunger.

By working within our local community during this difficult time, we can make a difference worldwide. If you have any questions, reach out to Moundsville or New Martinsville Rotary Club or contact Brianna Hickman at 304-709-3511. We hope to virtually see you there!
