Demolition of Former Thomas Drug Store Complete
Wednesday, November 27, was a day many in the community had been looking forward to for the past 10 years. In 2009 New Martinsville City officials announced at their September meeting that the Thomas Drug store building located on North Street by the railroad tracks had been condemned.
At that time it was unclear how long the process would take to remove the eyesore, however 10 years later it became a reality. Recently bids were taken for the project by the City of New Martinsville and the job was awarded to Jim Klug Excavating. His crew started on the project during the morning hours on Wednesday, and by late-afternoon the mission was accomplished aside from cleaning up the remaining rubble.
Thanks to 10 years of hard work by the City of New Martinsville along with help from the County Commission and others, area residents and passersby can now feel relieved they no longer have to look at the structure or have a danger present in their neighborhood. Many thanks to all who helped in the efforts to have the structure removed.
Many people have fond memories of stopping by the store for a bowl of chili or a hamburger and chatting with the Thomas’s while waiting on their prescription to be filled.
Once a beautiful building which also housed apartments upstairs, it was well known by locals for a place to lay their cap and enjoy lunch.
